Post 2009 TTS Supercharged S2K - The story

*** Wanted to get this at the top of the post so people see it. If you want to see the Rotrex supercharger installed in the S2000, TTS Performance have a stand at the Autosport Show at the NEC this weekend, get along there. Sorry for the overt pitch but hey I love what they have done to my car so feel compeled to mention it***

Having previously owned a number of interesting two seater sports and other performance cars I was recently fortunate enough to find myself in a position to have a budget of around £30k to spend on a new ride (having had the sense to off load my Merc AMG just at the start of the down turn ).

Now the criteria was going to be a challenge given the budget and the fact that I really wanted something special and different. It had to be a two seater sports and it had to have a roof that came off for the summer. It had to be a drivers car but still be able to do the daily commute (about 70 mile round trip) if needed. Plus I wanted it to be as new as possible (08 or 09 plate).

After much deliberation I concluded that the S2000 was about the only car that ticked all the boxes and was in budget, but I was really looking for serious performance rather than just exciting performance. By pure chance it was at this exact time that I came across an article on Richard Albans and his company TTS Performance Engineering over at Silverstone in Banzai magazine. The article was about how Richard had been successfully fitting the Rotrex supercharger in the S2000 for some while and what a neat package it was. I had come across TTS and Rotrex some years earlier in connection to with a different project. There was no looking back from that point

The more I researched what TTS and Richard were doing and the great way the S2000 lends itselft to supercharging I knew where I was heading. After a lot of searching and negotiations I concluded that for around the RRP of an 09 plate S I could purchase the car (good deal of course given the market state) have the Rotrex installation carried out, get a set of red Tarox six pot calipers, 320mm discs and braided hoses fitted along with upper and lower braces.

It was going to be a challenge even for Richard who was going to be doing the installation on the newer fly-by-wire throttle for the first time, be he convinced me that with a second ECU, second fuel rail and an additional four injectors we could be in business. A test drive in his daily driver with the Rotrex fitted convinced me it had to be done!

If all went well I concluded that for a good deal less than the buy price of a Porsche Boxter S on the same plate I could have a car that would blow not only that but most of the rest of the same marque away!! Never having been that fussed by badges but rather performance, that appealed to me.

I am pleased to say that Richard and TTS were absolutely good for their word and in mid December 09 I took delivery of the revised RO09 JBU (purchased in standard form in late October 09) . The base line run on the TTS dyno before mods put the power figure at 183 hp at the wheels. When the work was finished and the new setup fully sorted the final run showed 377hp at the wheels. I probably don't need to say much about my initial impressions of my S2K with that kind of power. Suffice to say I could not stop smiling from the moment I picked it up and for the three or four times I have taken it out (It ain't a car for the snow!!).

Everyhing I had hoped for. TTS also fitted the Tarox six pot calipers, rotors and uprated pads front, EBC yellow stuff pads rear and the front braces.

Don't want to go on forever about it, in fact I can't as I managed to slip on some ice on the 29th December and fracture my ankle, so now cannot drive anything let alone the S until late Feb!! When I can I will definately post some more observations. However I have posted some pics below and if anyone would like more information please PM me or check this link to the key details on the TTS website http://www.tts-performance.com/catalog/con...s2000stage2.pdf.

One thing I can say is the power delivery is awesome. Very progressive and as the revs build the thrust is wicked. That said it is actually more driveable than pre installation and early indications are that economy is little impacted. I am convinced it was the perfect solution to what to do with the cash. Can't wait for the sun to shine and the cast to come off my bloody ankle

Last point. If anyone living in the South East wants to take a look at Richard and the teams handy work in person they are welcome to give me a shout and arrange to come see it on my car or if you are heading for the Autosport Show at the NEC this weekend TTS has a stand there where you can see their work also. If you are in the Midlands give them a shout if you are interested.

Good post.

esem is keeping quiet but he has one too

I'm particularly interested in the Tarox brakes, as they are something I wanted some years back, due to fitting under OEM wheels.

Are they good?

Are you having to run spacers to clear the calipers?

I've bought the 10 pot kit, but i haven't Test fitted them to judge clearance yet.
I'm guessing that i'll need to run a spacer to clear them.

I'm very interested in this SC kit and am sorely tempted to take the plunge.

With tarox kit no spacers required for stock rims that's for the b32 6pot and the b32 10 pot... As long as it's the b32 and not the b32 gt caliper u will be fine

Hi Guys,

My first impressions of the Tarox is that they certainly look the business.

Seriously though in reality I can't really say just how good they perform on the car as I had only just about got to finishing running them in when I did my ankle.

However the braided hoses certainly improved the feel (I felt the standard brakes felt a bit soft) and the last time out I started to give them a bit of a go. I think as to be expected they are will be great once there is a bit of heat in them. I expect the six pots to do a good job. I also really like the fact that they require no mods to the car to fit them (well that is not totally true as the guys at TTS had to modify the dust cover at the back of the caliper as was to be expected). The S2000 discs seem very quiet, not like the groved discs on my track day car which are very loud especially when first driven.

I threw some EBS yellows in the back just to try and ensure the balance stays good as well.

As soon as I try them out proper I will post my thoughts.

eSeM - nice to meet another Rotrex fan.

Look forward to meeting up sometime once I am mobile again!!

Magic, Richard mentioned that some of his other customers where on the forum.

Glad to have joined the gang

Out of curiosity, how much would one expect for a SC installation such as this, and what impact does it have on the vehicle warranty?
