Default Thirsty!

Took my S back to Wales on the weekend and almost had my first breakdown experience!

I had 3/4 of a tank just before leaving London. In my old mx, I could get home (200 miles) on 3/4 tank easily. Knowing the S has 10 litres more capacity than the mx tank, I trotted off home with fuel consumption being the last thing on my mind . Bad move. I had approx 20 miles left to get home and a small red light caught my eye on the corner of dash - no petrol!! I couldn't believe I'd used so much fuel. I can remember the dealer telling me I could go around 20 miles further before conking out completely.

I knew the last few miles were going to be touch and go, but I wasn't prepared for the humiliation of driving 55mph in the slow lane with all sorts of looks directed at me from drivers in 1.0 novas, polos, not to mention the smug grin I got off an MGF driver who burned passed me doing a tonne - I got the last laugh though when I saw all the crap coming out of his exhaust

I made it to the garage after my fuel saving antics - coasting in a stook is quite a tranquil experience actually. After sticking

This sounds a bit on the heavy side. On a long journey I reckon on about 36 mpg. My daily round of A road/M'way and town driving (including some V-tecing) gives 28.5-31 mpg which I think is pretty damn good for a performance car. Day to day I didn't find my MX5 much more economical, although on long M'way journeys it was capable of 40mpg+.

I must say I don't worry about fuel consumption too much and it's a long time since I bothered to keep any sort of reliable check, but in my daily urban commute (20 miles) I don't recall getting better than about 23-24 mpg. I do get noticeably better returns on a run of low 30s mpg. Then again, I can't say I drive for economy, I'd have bought a Civic for that!

I have got between 280 and 150 miles from a tank (the latter bbeing a track day). I think I average about 26mpg and do drive pretty hard most of the time; this equates to about 250 miles from a tank, which always seems to come around pretty quickly. The good thing is I do get to collect lots of Optimax Top Trumps ! 8,000 miles in the last 2.5 months, so have been getting lots of practice at filling up !

I cam back from Wales on Sunday, filled up at Newport, and used less than half a tank back to London. Was well chuffed although did take it easy (80 ish all the way). Perhaps someone nicked some of your fuel at the traffic lights ?!!

Mine ranges from 16 - 35. A rough reckoning is 250 miles per tank on mixed driving.

I must say I don't keep too close a watch on the fuel consumption because I fear it would frighten me to much I know in the first month of ownership of my car I spent nearly

230 per tank is about the same for me, although I echo Cedric's comment that if I am worried about fuel consumption I wouldn't have bought an S2000.

With the VTEC not working I can honestly say that my fuel consumption has improved dramatically I wonder why?

Guys,

Did'nt I hear somewhere that with the S when you hit the last 3 bars it works out to MPG. So if you drive hard the petrol will seem to disappear but if you take it easy again the bars come back but eventually they fall away. Might not be 100% here but Im sure I have read something like that on this site somewhere. Any ideas?

Cheers
