I'm interested in wiring some lights in the footwell to go on and off when you open the door, just like the dome light. Many cars have it. Does anyone know the easiest correct way to do this?
thanks...

For a soft glow, you could probably get away with some 12V super bright LEDs and tap them in parallel to the the overhead lights. Then all you need is to drill a holl and mount the LED under the dash.
MacGyver, what did you use?

Neons are easy to do.
Go buy some 10" or 9" neon sticks from Wall-Mart only $10 and they last forever. You can wire them into your inteior lights or you can wire them to a switch. Some switches light up also and look rreal clean. PM me if you need any more tech questions on how to do it. If you live in the Dallas area i'll do it for you for $30.

If all you want is a door-controlled light, tap into the door switch (and use a relay since you'll be pulling some power with several of those tubes. My circuit allowed the use of an on/off switch as well so you could leave the lights on regardless of door position. The correct setup was required so that the alarm didn't think the door was open everytime you flipped the switch to "on", thereby kicking the car-jacking feature into action.
