Default Need help replacing a rear wheel bearing.

UPDATE

This will be happening this Saturday, 7/31.

Since we're doing it at Aaron's parent's place, we might need to limit the number of people who can come. I will PM details to everybody who was interested and let you know what's going on a little later in the week.

/UPDATE

I'm pretty sure I have a bad rear wheel bearing. I'll be trying to confirm that this week. If it is the bearing, I'd really appreciate some help with getting the knuckle/hub off of my car, and then back on again after a shop has replaced the bearing.

From what I've read, the job doesn't look too bad if you know what you're doing, but someone inexperienced might run into trouble. I've never touched my suspension before, so I don't think I'm up to the job by myself.

I don't have a ball joint separator, 36mm socket for the axle nuts, or a torque wrench that goes to 220 lb/ft. (though I can probably borrow those things if you don't have them)

I'll do all the grunt work. I just want somebody who's done this before to sit next to me in a comfy chair with a drink and supervise.

I'd like to do it in the next week or two. Can anyone help? I'd be happy to compensate you with food, drink, manual labor, money, anything you want within reason really. Cut your grass a few times? Clean your gutters? You name it.

We could do this in my driveway in Olney, my girlfriends father's garage in Burtonsville, or your place if you'd prefer, if you have a garage I could leave my car in for a night (while the new bearing is pressed in). If we do it on a saturday, this could probably be a one day job. Many dealer service shops are open on saturdays and I think I could get the bearing pressed there.

Thanks for looking

I can help, but it wouldn't be for a few weeks. It's not that hard of a job. I have an extra axle nut, so don't buy one. I have 3 for some reason.

Also, I have access to a bearing press and would like to figure out how to do it all at once rather than involve a shop.

Thanks Aaron! I'm game for trying to press it ourselves.

When and where exactly are you thinking? Three weekends from now gets us to august 7. I think that's about as long as I want to wait, if I can help it.

Will keep this thread up to date. Looking like Aaron's or Jeff's place at the moment.

That's the only problem is my schedule = WTF.

Woodbridge, VA is where the press is at my parents' house.

July 25/25 = At the track.
July 31/1 = ???
August 7/8 = Stephanie's birthday weekend. Possible visitors from out of town to entertain. But even if they don't come, I'd be a dick not to spend the time with her.
August 14/15 = If the vistors don't come her birthday weekend possibly this weekend. Otherwise, I think I am free.

Hrm, ok, busy indeed! Well, I'll order the bearing and hub this week, so they'll be ready to go whenever.

Is the ??? two weeks from now a possibility? I could hold out to the 14/15 but that's pushing it I think.

Who knows how many hundred more miles I can drive before the bearing really starts to get uncooperative. AFAIK it's really only going to damage itself and the hub though, so until it starts making seriously scary noises, I should be ok.

Let me know what works for you once you figure it out.

If anybody is free to do it sooner, please chime in
