Nurburgring
So, I figure that I should give my father a bit of a break and fly him over here for a trip to the Nurburgring next summer. I haven't been there before but I do know that I don't want to be there on an open day.
So the questions are... who are the more reputable organisers for club or closed days on the track? How far in advance are these things normally publicised? If the old man wants to hire a car to go around in, who are the best providers and how much should he expect to pay? How much does a track day on the beast cost? And finally, what sort of prep to the car and myself would be useful?
Thanks!

This website is probably the best for information relating to the Ring

TouristFahrten, or TF as an open day is usually referred to, can be fine so don't rule them out.
However track days usually are better, and there's no bikes or buses. But they do cost more.
Track days are £300 and up, usually more like £400.
Hiring starts at the Rent4Ring swifts at 99Euro for 6 laps, all the way to 911 GT3RS from RSR at about £2500 for the day. There's also btgmotorsport who'll do Colt's, 350Z's Evo 10's and a GTR. All firms I'd use again. Beware of excesses though, they can be high. But you have the advantage of the barriers being insured beyond the excess.
Your car doesn't need any mods, just make sure you have plenty of meat on your brake pads, your tyres aren't too low and you're topped up with oil.
As for the calendar of dates, you probably won't find them for next summer until Feb. bookatrack, destinationnurburgring and RMA from the UK occasionally do track days there. There's some european TDO's as well, but I'm not up on them.

Try these guys, I have dealt with them before. They have the contract to take new Nissan GTR owners round the North and South loop

Quite a selection of vehicles, very close to the ring and well connected.

Also, watch video's before you go, they're better than games for learning the track.
Here's me in an RSR Megane earlier this year as an example
