Default Recall work - molybdenum & extra years warranty - fact or fiction?

Regarding the current spark plug / piston oil jet bolt work, I would appreciate everyones' comments, especially if you have either had the work done or have your car booked in.

My dealer has no knowledge of needing to add anything, molybdenum or otherwise for cars of less than 9,000 miles. Does anyone know where the dealers who have told people this have got their information? Honda intranet?

Also regarding the extra year's warranty on the engine, was this stated in a letter from Honda U.K. or were you informed when you picked your car up? Is it a Honda U.K. thing and therefore just applies to cars bought through Honda U.K. rather then E.U. sourced cars maybe?

I've called the Honda Contact Centre (0845 200 8000) and was transferred to the relevant department (hopefully), they confirmed that my car needed the work doing (hmmm I sort of knew this already ) but did not have any information on the oil addative or warranty.

My car is booked in on Monday 30th September, so I'd like to get to the bottom of this if possible, otherwise I'll just have to go by what my dealer finds or doesn't find on the Honda intranet and put it down to folklore and dealers bullshitting customers. It would be nice to know one way or the other, especially about the oil addative, before they start tinkering with my engine's innards

As far as this helps - booked mine in for 30 Sep, asked specifically about the issue of the oil as my car has only done 1500 miles. Service Manager said no problem, they will add an additive to handle that. Was familiar with the issue.

Also, although not asked by you, the 'gasket' is something that they have to leave to set, you can see the excess on mine (grey in colour). No input on oil as I'm at 20,400, but I insisted on Mobil 1 (mine ) rather than the shell crap IMHO.

Warranty was never mentioned, but I only just got (gratis ) extended 3 year warranty / Honda assistance.

Yes, I'd noticed that some owners were being told that their cars would be required for two days. I'll let them know that there's no rush to get it done in one day. They'll have the car for 8:00 am at any rate.

Thanks for that

i dont know about honda.....but for Nissan ( i am a service advisor ), any work performed comes with a "dealer 12 months / 12,000 mile warranty from any part or labor defect".

so to answer the question of extra year warranty....yes.

is it an extension??......probbaly not, unless it is specifically mentioned in the recall/bulliten.

Just got my car back after having both plugs & bolts changed.

I got a letter from Honda asking me to take my car in to have the work done. The letter also stated that you receive a free tailor mode engine warranty for an extra year. This will come into effect after the initial 3 year warranty runs out.

Thanks for that thats just what I wanted to hear. Hopefully my dealer will have investigated and be aware of this by Monday, otherwise if I have the work done I may not get the letter and with no proof the extra year may be difficult to claim if needed I'll have a chat to them and may postpone the work pending the letter if nothing can be resolved

RevIllusionsThanks for pointing out that scenario, its handy to be aware that the dealer may assume that its a 12 month warranty on the work, to run concurrently with the existing warranty. (this is probably the case anyway!)

Please let us know if this mod is for all years or only BY2002.
You now have me worried as the dealer who sold me my o1 model with 6000 miles did not know about this mod .....

Hello Mr Bean,

love that Monte Carlo Blue

I believe these mods (spark plug & piston oil jet bolt) are for all cars upto late MY 2002. Dealers have only recently been informed. I enquired a few months ago and got a blank look, as I did when I asked about oil addatives and extra years warranty last week.

You can use the following link on the Honda site to enquire about your car. They'll send you an email with an attached .pdf file within a day or so link

What I'm trying to work out is if this extra year's warranty thing is a Honda U.K. only deal or all cars?

Has anyone with an E.U. import actually received a letter stating that there's an extra years warranty

got to make little baby in on Weds. Received the infamous letter from Honda last week - seems that the spark plugs misfire in one of the batches. The straight swap will take them 1/2 day so they say. Mine is a July 02 model. Will keep you posted !
