I Like My 2006 S2000 Better Than My 2012 911 997.2 GTS

Default I Like My 2006 S2000 Better Than My 2012 911 997.2 GTS

Just want to say I am a new member here. Not humble-bragging here, but I just wanted to say how much fun I am having with my new to me 2006 Honda S2000 in new formula red. I got a pretty good deal on the car although it was pretty rough. I got a 911 GTS that I was looking for for many years last fall but I rarely drive it even though weather is pretty nice all year round in California. Love looking at the car and love the smugness of owning a 911, but you can't do too much with the car and it just doesn't feel like anything. You do feel rich when you are tooling around in it and it is a very fast solid car that probably won't lose too much more in depreciation, but it is not that fun. I have been having a blast working on the S2000. I cannot see why people complain about the lack of torque. It seems like a perfectly balanced car. The gearing and light weight of the car seem to negate the low by modern standards torque rating. The shifter is almost perfect. Its like using a very nice bolt action rifle. Clutch effort is very well dialed in as well and I have no problem with the drive by wire throttle. Yes there are issues with bumpy ride and noisiness, but that is with any tiny car. They could have tossed the spare tire and added a second layer of insulation to the top but that would have added too much weight or complexity I guess. Its hard to believe that late 90's technology still holds up this well today. I was telling my work friends, many of whom are chemists that if you took an already decent car and distilled it down and collected the best, purest fraction, that would be the S2000. Still trying to work out the clunk in the rear, but I am almost done with my restoration and the great thing is I won't lose that much to depreciation if I keep it nice even if I put on another 30k miles (bought at 91K miles). Its hard to believe that the difference in MSRP between my Porsche (did not buy it new btw) and the S2000 was $100K and I don't think the 911 is $100K better. I would like to think I am an enthusiast because I have had an Acura Integra, E30 M3, E36 M3, and a 911 GTS so I would like to think I know a thing or two about niche automobiles. I am just honored and feel so lucky that I can enjoy the cheap, guilt free thrills of an S2000. I understand why there is such a crazy devout following. Peace out. F. Louis.

Did you try tightening down the spare tire nut to fix the clunk?

I am a prior 911 S 997.2 owner, I did love that car, but to your point it is not $60K more fun then the S2K, I paid about that much more for my 911. Now I have my S2K and my Shelby, I would say the 911 is in the middle of the 2, if I could only have one toy a 911 or Boxster Spyder would be the car, but I enjoy the power of the shelby and the nimbleness of the S2K so for now I am sticking with my current toys.

Glad to hear you like it so much, it is a fun car for sure!!!

I occasionally find myself afflicted by PES (Porsche Envy Syndrome).

So far I have managed to shake it off without acquiring a Porsche. I've had a couple of close calls.

Congrats on your NFR AP2! Recently, I'd started looking for a possible replacement for my CR. Test drove a 2015 Boxster S(6 speed manual) and a 997 S cabrio but neither car wowed me. They were both great cars but they weren't as fun as my CR. One of my friends recently purchased a 2016 Boxster Spyder and let me drive it. It was absolutely awesome! I wish my budget allowed me for this amazing car. Boxster Spyder was definitely a car that I would love to own one day but for now, I'll happily keep the CR for awhile. Enjoy your new S!
