Default JDM bumpers with an air duct

JDM bumpers such as Mugen SS, J's Type S, Ings +1 etc etc have an air duct...
i was wondering if there is any chance of hydro lock while driving in rain..

we talk crap about AEM cai and its hydro lock problem....

I don't think so.. the problem with AEM type intakes is that the filter is so low to the ground that it can be easily submersed in water. I guess it could hydro lock.. if your car flew into a river... or there was a flash flood...

a friend of mine w/ an AEM CAI got CEL because he was driving on I-5 for 4 hours in rain
thats not because of a water puddle either... im wondering if that could happened to a JDM bumper with an air duct

i kinda noticed that the tip of j's and mugen intake is curved downwards... im sure that would help as well

Does he have those holes in the rain gutter under the hood pluged? I head some of the AEM guys taped up the holes and they didn't have much of a problem anymore.

Hey Aaron,

AEM actually makes a bypass valve to avoid that kind of situation. When I had the aem cold air intake, I would normally install the bypass valve ONLY on rainy days, it was a b-tch, but that's pretty much the safe route.

I highly doubt the car will hydro lock with any of those bumpers you've mention. It's not the bumper that will even cause this problem. The position of the intake ( Mugen, J's, ASM ) makes it difficult for the car to hydro lock compared to most cold air intakes. Unless you drive your car into a pool of water, now that would be a different story.

You will be fine. I ran my Mugen SS in Hawaii were it rains hard every other day and I didnt worry one bit. However with the AEM I couldnt take the car out of the garage.

Last time I was at the Honda dealer, this dude was getting his engine replaced because of water getting into the intake.
He had OEM.
