Superchargers Pro's & Cons Q&A
I am posting this as I just bought an MY02 w/10k mi. and I am
Considering a Supercharger. However, I am concerned about long
term reliabilty so I would truly appreciate some knowledgable answers!
Here are the Pro's and Con's I've gathered in my research :
Pro's: More torque , good on gas being centrifigual, comptech
unit was warrantied if installed by a honda/acura dealer.
If Honda will warranty an SC and not any other mods that
says alot! Honda's Million + $ R&D dept. doesn't play! Also
has forged pistons.
Con's: I recently spoke to a world class Porsche tuner. He explained
that the 911 had an aftermarket SC available for around $6k.
He stated the 911 enignes are 11:1 same as S2, and if u
put an SC on that engine you'll be looking at a rebuild in a
year or so. He said that lowering the compression and going
turbo was a good route for that engine. Also, I noticed some
of you guys with Sc's don't rev the car to redline out of fear
and don't take off hard from a stop. Why would I buy an SC
to have to worry about babying the car??? Answers please!

Know to rip apart your pros and cons...
You will gain a little more torque with a supercharger. However it will be spread across the rev range range. You will keep the same linear power band of a stock S2K but you will gain "super" Vtec. That's when the charger really pulls.
Centrifigual charger good on gas... . Since it's being driven off the crank pulley...don't expect good gas milage unless you plan to never go into boost.
I'm not sure if I would trust Honda to warranty a supercharger. I was told the same thing when I purchased my Comptech. However, the dealership wanted top doller for the kit and installation. Since the Comptech kit has been know to be reliable ot of the box...I opted to do it myself. No issues to report after several thousand miles.
I'm not touching the Porsche vs. Honda engines...
A turbo is another direction to go. However, it will cost a lot more than a supercharger and will require more tunning and maintenance. Compared to a supercharger you will gain more power in the lower revs. But keep in mind...power doesn't come cheap. Again, please check out the forced induction forum for more info on turbo kits.

I actually get good gas milage on the freeway, 27-28.
I dont fear revvin mine out to 9k. hard launches I'd fear for my diff not the motor.
with regular maintance I dont see how a SC'd S wouldnt last. Ive had mine in for almost 2 years with alot of revvin.

Mine has been dead reliable. I have done a number of track days and spent plenty of time in boost. I love the reliability. In fact, I recently bought a 4" pulley and will be swapping out my stock pulley. Within a year or two the car will do almost exclusive track duty and I do not believe I should have an issue.
Good luck but don't fear the SC. My turbo buddies constantly nag me to switch over to the dark side...eh, maybe one day. For now, I'm making 2/3's the power with 1/10 the headaches. It's a fair trade if you ask me.
