I'd say you did better for yourself then your financial planner did. Just recognizing the greed of your coworkers and not getting drawn into the competition yourself has probably saved you more than anything.

I think it's your high income and success in not pissing it all away, not your financial planner's advice, that enabled you to hang up your stethoscope.
But it sounds like you're not truly retired if you're planning to do cardiological research.
I have a BBA and an MBA in Finance, and feel very comfortable doing my own financial planning. My wife or I will prob. continue working until we qualify for Medicare just b/c paying for health insurance w/o employer subsidies is so expensive.
