US tax questions
where I can get some simple guidelines?
As far as I know if you hold a securities for less than a year the gains will be taxed 35% if more than a year just "only" 15%
The same taxation holds to deposits
some information regarding 401K. I usually invest with ETFs, no many movements on the year, just to rebalanced the portfolio, less than 15 per year and do not make any withdraws.
In Spain is possible to sell a fund and invest the gains and principal in other fund without incurring in tax gains. Tax are incurred when you sell a fund only . Something similar here?
Thanks

If it's a 401(k) you don't pay taxes unless you are taking a distribution from it. In addition, when you do take a distribution from this type of account you pay your normal tax rate and not a capital gains tax.

long term gains are taxed at 15% - this should hold for the remainder of 2008. There are rumblings that this will change, especially if the Democrats are elected to Presidency.
