source of rodent smell

I'm experiencing a strong almost overpowering rodent smell in my 2003 S2000 that is likely a mouse nest or mouse urine or worse. I'm unable to find the source and wondered if others having experienced similar invasions have determined the likely location of the deposit from which the smell is emanating? Both actual experience and likely suspicions will be helpful. Thank you.

Maybe a dog or cat can sniff it out for you.

Hadn't thought of that. My dog already chases squirrels, chipmunks, etc.

- Pull out the trunk lining, look behind there. Where the fuel tank is. It’s what the softop rests on.

- Seats are easy to take out, so you can do that or just turn on your phone’s video (with flash on) on your iPhone and record what’s under the seat. Review.

- Pop the hood and look under your clutch and brake fluid reservoirs. Do the same around battery area.

- Take the tool kit out, now take a look at the very bottom of your trunk. Is it warp, soggy or if you push down does it sound sloshy? If YES then your softop drains are leaking. There’s also a trunk/rear bumper vent seal known to leak.

I knew of an S2000 that was poorly stored (outdoors) for two years. Rats built a nest on top of the gas tank. The tank was corroded from rat urine, hoses were chewed, and the only way to get to the tank was to drop the subframe. Cross your fingers.

That spot on top of the tank under the soft top tray seems like a go to spot for the mice. I would also look under the hood passenger side right below the windshield where the OEM air filter lives. Look in the places where we have easy to chew insulation, plastic and sound deadening
material.

I'm suffering from this problem as well. Car was sitting in my garage from mid July until mid October. I have to do further investigation. But strongest smell of dead carcass seems to come from under the windshield washer bottle. Perhaps between the fender and the inner fender lining. I just hope it is a mouse and not a groundhog. https://www.s2ki.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif
