All depends on what you like .. Hell's Kitchen area is my favorite for a good mix of dives, pubs and trendy spots. Since your an out of towner, Time Square is right there so you guys can visit that area as well.

Pub - Landsdown, Coppersmiths, Vallhalla
Trendy - Traffic(close to Hell's Kitch), Reunion
There is plenty more surrounding the aboved mentioned.
