Happy 236th Birthday Marines!
Simper Fi! Today marks the 236 anniversary of the founding of the Marine Corps ( not pronounced "corpse" Mr. President), and is being celebrated in ceremonies at camps and stations around the globe today.
Formed in 1775, the Continental Congress authorized the creation of a force that would operate on the high seas and conduct ship-to-ship battles. Since then, the Marines have served in every major conflict the United State's has ever fought; from the "halls of Montezuma" (the clearing of the Chapultepec Castle during the Mexican-American War) to the "shores of Tripoli" (The wars on the Barbary Coast from 1801 - 1805, oh, and right now in Libya). But things are not all rosy for the Corps. The Marine's face a troop reduction over the next two years, from its authorized force of 202,000 to 186,000 and, with Pentagon cuts looming, that number could be reduced even further. Their contributions to the defense of American interests at home and abroad cannot be understated. Corpsmen and women everywhere deserve your support and admiration. If you see one out celebrating today, in full dress blues or no, pay their bar tab for them. You owe 'em that much. SEMPER FI MARINES SGT. CARRERAS/3011 |
