HELP! Stripped bolt and thread
 

I was doing pads and rotors on my wifes 2007 TL Type S and the bottom bolt(19mm) came out damaging the thread from the Brembo caliper(bottom hole). I thought it just F'd up the bolt but as you can see the threading where the bolt goes in to the caliper is damaged and can't fit a new bolt in there. Anyone know what I can do in this situation or know any shops that can rethread the existing bolt hole?? I took off the caliper in the meantime. I appreciate any help anyone can give me.

Looks like some of the bolt came off into the hole. Can you start a brand new bolt in the hole? If so, then you can probably chase the threads with a tap.

I can barely start it with a new bolt. Does anyone have experience with helicoil or know a shop that can restore threads?

I've used helicoils before. If you want to helicoil it, you need to drill that hole out to a larger diameter first. Running though it with the same thread is a less invasive procedure and should be tried first. Ideally that will only clean out the metal which shouldn't be there and restore the caliper to original condition.

If it doesn't work, you can alway drill it out and try to helicoil it.

Billman, I'm in nj but I have the caliper off so I can come to you.

I don't have a tap to chase it nor am I super confident in attempting it and making it worse.. I want to make sure to get it done right and get it back on the road ASAP.

Taps are pretty easy its like threading a bolt just a little tougher to turn, its worth a shot to try and re thread the same, worst case you screw it up could always drill it out 1/8" more and go with a larger bolt and thread.

I'll guess that it's about an M14 or so size because of the 19mm head. After the cost of the tap, tap handle, cutting fluid etc, you might be better off taking the caliper to a machine shop or visiting Billman.

If you can measure the replacement bolt (hardware and auto parts stores have test holes), then when you call machine shops you can tell them what size hole you need fixed.
