Default Lookin for mechanic help in the metro area

Hey all,

I've had my S for about a year now. It's a 2002 suzuka, bought her mostly stock with about 22k miles last year. Everything's been fine up until a few months ago when I started getting CELs right around 30k miles. They pop up right around idle, but the car never has any problem with power or when rolling through vtec. Anytime that I clear them they consistently come back within a day or two, often while just driving around. I can't actually feel a misfire when this happens.

I've pulled the codes and its always a combination of cylinder 1,3, and random misfires. I've gone ahead and read the many misfire threads and followed most of the suggestions there. So far the car's had new plugs, new coil packs, and a valve adjustment. None of this has worked at all, and the CEL's keep coming back (ran some injector cleaner with no results either). Recently I had the injectors swapped around to see if the code would change cylinders but it hasn't. On top of that I've noticed the idle start to get a little rough.

My next step is to get a compression test to see if there might be some headgasket issues, but my mechanic has been doubtful about that being the case. He's a great guy, but I can tell this problem has been frustrating him. I'm just wondering if anyone has had experiences with the incurable misfiring here before and if they know any good shops that have dealt with this before in the northern NJ area. Any help would be really appreciated!

Do a leakdown test, it sounds like you have bent valves. Compression test will not show it. Also make sure whoever does the leakdown test can tell you WHERE the leak is going or don't bother.

Barely bent valves will misfire at idle, and run perfect just above idle and beyond.

would a valve adjustment not address this? because I already had that performed.

No a valve adj has nothing to do with a leakdown test.

so I got that compression test. Meant to get a leakdown as well but my mechanic wasnt able to get to it in time. Compression in cylinders 1,2,4 was all 240 on the dot, cylinder 3 however was 96. Looks like a valve problem as mentioned, so it seems I'm looking at a pretty good sized bill to get everything back to normal. Thanks for the advice so far everyone.

A proper leakdown test will determine your path of action.

Valves=fix it while you wait.
Cylinder=leave the car for engine bottom end work.
