If you want to keep your stock controls on the left of your steering wheel, you will need one.

I personally don't have it and I've been fine.

Yeah sucks without it imo. I didn't have the dci for a good while and was a real pain in the ass. Got one for my eclipse head unit and million times better now!

depends on the H/U you get..
I have an Alpine x305 which only plays mp3's & WMA's through a file browser layout (no CD player)
so the DCI wouldn't work for 90% of the H/U's functions

I agree. Going on 3 years now without the dash controls. It's just as easy to reach over to the HU, only the HU has more functionality than the dash controls

Not to contradict me, but then contradict me?

The ability to use or not to use the dash controls should not be a concern when selecting a HU.

Lol! Roll your eyes all you want, but its a very useful feature in my opinion. Not worth rendering useless because of lack of foresight when picking a head unit.

I bought a hu that didn't let me retain dash controls. You get used to having no dash control. But now, almost a year later, I just bought a new hu that lets me use the dash controls. I can't tell you how good it feels. Having those few buttons not work always bothered me. lolz it made me feel like the S was broken.

If I were you, I would just take a little time and find a hu that lets you retain dash controls. I mean it came with the car right? Why not use it lol
