Futzing about

Everybody is doing build threads.

Bugsy is puttering.

I figured I would start "Conedodger's Futzing About"

Installed VFR mirrors and new 4-point harnesses on the Vortx over the weekend. The old mirrors were too low, too small, and too floppy. Wouldn't hold adjustment and were always pointing at the rear fenders. Lap belts were impossible to adjust.

If anyone is looking for a deal on 4-point harnesses, there are new military spec surplus on eBay for $45 a set. Made by Schroth. Schroth street harnesses are going for 4X that price and these are nicer.

Yesterday I cut big holes in the side of the Vortx.

Today I fixed something that has been bugging me for years. The VFR has an exposed frame rail on each side that had faded, ugly paint. Wrapped it in 3M Carbon Fiber.

What is this 3M carbon fiber you speak of? What uses does it have?

It is a vinyl wrap.

You can wrap almost anything with it: https://www.google.com/search?q=3M+c...eCDvFNZXaPppM:

The Vortex should be fenderless !

That color is awesome, carbon wrap looks great

Another project in the works for the Vortx. The R1 has a flaky oil level sensor. It is a well known issue with no real cure for it. I've been tempted to jumper out the warning light, but it would leave me with no oil indicator. Fortunately, I have a brand new VDO oil pressure gauge that I bought 15+ years ago for one of the X1/9s that I never got around to installing. Knowing motorcycle electrics, I decided it would be a good idea to install a volt meter while I was at it. Picked up a matching VDO gauge from Ebay for $21. I spent a few minutes last night in front of the TV and made a wiring harness for the gauges. I still need to order an adapter fitting and a braided flex hose for the oil pressure sensor, but it should be a relatively easy install after that.

Vortx, R1, VFR .... assuming an S2000, that's quite the stable.

I like the aftermarket motorcycle turn signals on the Vortx. :)

The R1 is part of the Vortx. ;)

After almost 15 years, 73K miles, and hundreds of autocross events I broke down and upgraded the brakes on the S2000.

Surprisingly, the OEM front pads have about 30% life left and the rears are at 50%. The OEM rotors are still in great shape with no ridges, grooves, or obvious wear. I probably could have scuffed them and reused them.

A 2 04-24-2018 12:18 PM

Why am I under the impression that you upgraded the pads and rotors last year? Or perhaps you posted about this as a to do for this season.

I hope those Ferodos don’t squeal like the HP Plus.

Do the brake lines too. They're old.

Great tip! Replaced with braided stainless 10K miles ago.

I swear our S2k's are twins (except for the amount of autocross events). Same color, year, mileage and now similar brake wear. I replaced all my rotors and pads with oem about two years ago and steel braided lines. I sure miss those original ap1 pads and their initial bite, the civic pads that replaced them do not share in that characteristic. Oh well, recently had my original rotors machined for a spare track set ( purchased track pads also). Shop I took them to said there is plenty of material left on them. They did an excellent job, even bead blasted the hats, they look brand new. Can't wait to swap them on and bed the pads for the track event at NYST.

Now that the SCCA is back at Seneca Army Depot, have any thoughts about autocrossing?

I'm curious. Why did you go with the Civic Si pads? I know they are the same size as the S2000 pads. Were OEM pads not available?

I believe the AP2 AP1 shares pads with the Civic SI. The original AP1 pads were different and no longer available.

A 2 04-30-2018 11:33 AM

The pads are different part numbers from Honda. So I assume the material is different.

I noticed they’re the same size when I looked at Hawk HP Plus pads for the S2000 and realized that Hawk had the same number for both cars.

Are the AP2 pads different in size or is it just the material?

and apologies in advance if I’m derailing your thread :hidebc:

I misspoke...the AP1 pad part number has been superceded by the Civic SI part number. Not sure why they don't spec the AP2 pad as a replacement.

A 2 04-30-2018 11:46 AM

You’re correct. They really should have the AP2 pads be a replacement for the AP1 pads.

The pad backing plates (AP2, Si and Hawk) are all the same dimensions and easily fit into the caliper brackets. So when I upgraded to the Hawks on the S2000, I just used the ones that I’d run on the Civic Si for 5 track days and got a good season out of them.
