I'm surprised you got 9+ years
Actually I never thought about how old it was until it died, then I was shocked when I started counting off the years. I've had this truck for a lonnnngggggggg time.

Also Doug, Did you get a refund from DMV for the unused portion of the registration, or (like I'm thinking) did the state keep it?
Also does the state charge extra for new plates each time you change?

Last year I did not get a refund and when I registered the cars there was almost no cost because I still had a valid registration based upon what I had paid and when it was to expire. The S2000 was something like $9.00 and the CRX-SiR was "free". The pain though is I could not re-register the CRX-SiR by mail because it was due for renewal in June and they would not be able to make the paperwork quick enough, so I had to remember to go down there and do it.
I'm sure NYS is not giving me back a full perfectly calculated pro-rated rebate, but then again the registration money pails to the insurance savings.
As far as I can see, there is no charge to change for me because when I re-register the cars they give me new plates as part of the registration. However if you just walked in and wanted a new number then there might be a charge.

Insurance carriers now must report to the DMV that insurance is or is not inforce. If your carrier reports that liability coverage is suspended then the plates better have been turned in or a FS violation will be generated. Carriers used to suspend Liability coverage without the need to turn in plates. With the new efforts of inforcing DMV rules liability insurance must be in force if plates are out there. Is your carrier only suspending Comp. & Coll.?

I drop liability and collision, both are not needed while the car sits in the garage under its blankie. Comprehensive on the other hand can not be removed as far as I'm concerned due to all the other nasty things that could happen including theft.

Wow that's some weird system you have.
For us you can't get plates without insurance, but you don't have to have plates to insure.
I can take all insurance off as long as I don't drive it. Do you guys get a refund on the plates at least?
It costs us $20 for a new set, but we get a refund on the unused sticker portion. So If I was really anal I could save about $20 a year by turning in my plates for the winter, but not worth the hassle.
And 9 yrs of the battery is pretty good. Usually 5 yrs and it's over.

James, I'm not sure what works best, but what I do know is we still have asswipes driving around without any insurance. I got hit last year by an uninsured ass and the only way I could get my truck fixed was to pay for it out of my pocket, or submit a claim to my insurance company and see if they would raise my rates. I decided to do nothing, so I live with the dent....
I will get a refund for the unused portion of my registration fee yes.

Doug!! Dang, I should have checked this thread earlier. Don't get a refund!! Take the credit towards next year's registration. Last year when I turned in my plates, I asked for a refund, the lady gave it to me and also told me it would be cheaper to not get the refund and use the credit towards next year. She said you save more money that way.
