Randomly* stumbled across this thread - welcome to NZ! I see you're in the South Island, which is generally the place to be if you're after magnificent scenery and almost no people. Not that the North Island doesn't have its fair share of attractions.
Remember though: Everything may be smaller here, but at least it's expensive!
*OK not randomly, I saw A2's avatar and followed my nose,

Thank’s hertz donut. I have to put N.Z. in my top 3, maybe my top 2 with highlands of Scotland.
Should be on north island tomorrow - Gisborne.
Arrive Auckland on Sunday. Tried to scope out trip to Bruce McLaren Heritage Center but don’t think we can make it there as we need to be at airport at 12:30 for 3:30 flight. Hampton Downs is 1 hour drive beyond airport, so 2 hours round trip. Cab estimated at $1300 if it waits.
I’ll need to make a plan for a return trip. Maybe I can arrange a MGA vintage race in my off season.
Looking forward to getting home. Too much time wasted at sea.

osprey - Gisborne's an...interesting place to be stopping off, Napier's the primary place to see along the East Coast of the island and there's an Art Deco festival on there this weekend, with plenty of old cars and aircraft in the area. Great fun if you can make it but it's about a 3 hour drive each way. It's a pretty fun road though...

When you have a wife and are traveling by cruise ship as your quid pro quo for tracking the S and racing the MGA , you are somewhat a captive. But if you like a two lane road, and you are not the “Unruly Tourists” (google them), this is an excellent place to return to. Might need to bring a sleeping bag and rough it a bit, but I love the place as far as I can tell.

For you Captain Cook fans, we were in Turango in the Bay of Plenty yesterday. Was Saturday with perfect beach weather and town like something on Jersey Shore or Ocean City, MD, except more upscale. My first note of interest was maybe a half dozen VW busses in the campground. Then saw maybe another 10 in town later in the day, plus a number of VW bugs. 1970s vintage. A couple of MX5s in nice shape and some other sports cars leading me to believe a car show nearby. Crowds at the beach with about 40 kids swimming off of a pier, something that would be verboten in US. Everything still neat and tidy and me still wanting to do a drive around the country. Flying out today, but flying into Sunday so I should be home today despite something like 23 hours of travel.
