Every small volume car company faces bigger and bigger challenges as more and more regulations and increasing complexities/features. R&D expenses increase exponentially.

Porsche risked its soul when they built the Cayenne but they successfully partnered with VW and increased their revenue base. This will support the R&D necessary to build the value in newer models of their sports cars.

BMW runs Rolls Royce under the same scenario. Both Porsche and RR have maintained their identity ( so far).

Ferrari is unique but I think it's inevitable that development efforts be shared with Fiat, probably for more mundane parts - seats, door handles, power windows etc.

Whether this can be managed to retain Ferraris' identity and the passion it inspires remains to be seen. Marchione is a brilliant manager but he's never dealt with a situation like this.

^ :iagree:

The fiat stable also includes Maserati and Alfa. Those brands could be leveraged to keep Porsche & Mclaren at bay while Ferrari can still keep it's exclusivity. With the Ghibli and 4c and forthcoming Maserati SUV, they are probably already fighting Porsche, jaguar-landrover and McLaren.

But as you say there may be deeper reasons such as R&D costs and cost pressures across the board that could have influenced Luca's ouster. I'll be watching to see where they go. Hopefully Ferrari does not lose what makes their cars unique.

So apparently Auto Polo was a thing back in the day when cars were becoming somewhat mainstream

A link to some old car crash pictures. Said to be from the Library of Congress.
