Default Data recovery

Wondered if any f the IT people on here can help me with recovering a folder and/or its contents.

Situation and sequence:

Bought new laptop for other half (windows 10)
Needed to transfer files from old laptop (windows 10)
Decided to back up separate hard drive from old laptop first - did that with no problems and checked folders and files were ok
Then started deleting files and folders on the old laptop in preparation for getting rid
Also emptied recycle bin on old laptop
New laptop started syncing with one drive so I left it while I went out
When I came back the sync had stalled because there wasn't enough free one drive memory
Didn't like the look of this so had a look at the connected hard drive to discover one folder which had not been synced was now empty! A folder that had been deleted before emptying the recycle bin on the old laptop
Updated the storage capacity on the new laptop and resumed the sync
Sync completed but no missing folde

Have tried some basic recovery software but it's not finding the missing folder or files on either the old laptop of the separate hard drive. These are big mp4 files so tae up a lot of space. They were all in the one missing folder.

Any ideas to help locate the missing folder and its contents?

Which software have you tried? I have had good results with www.easeus.com
DiskDigger is another one to try.

handyrecoveryfw - let me try and find a link. You'll need to scan the original drive though and if you use it, you must recover it to a different physical drive.

Childs play to use AND free.

Wetransfer link to the file. https://we.tl/QrLqXPXSAs

Does any of this work with an external HD? I've got a 10+ year old WD drive that I can't get onto anymore and would love to get all the photos off

Got that and no good but UF's suggestion is finding stuff others don't. Have left it deep scanning and will report back

Some do. I remember reading about this with one of the products I am trying. Will post later

It won't recover after a format but it will recover if something was deleted - sometimes you have to go through ALL the strange folders to find things. Generally it finds the folder structure and anything marked with a first aid cross can be recovered. It was free when i first downloaded it about 10 years ago and it's one of my staple rescue tools.

The positive here is that the data is unlikely to have been deleted, just the references to it removed (and noted for overwrite at a later date). It should be recoverable.

Personally I wouldn't go down the route of using/buying recovery software that runs on the same OS that the error occurred on. It's like asking someone with dementia to accurate describe the last 24hrs. And is a windfall industry for shit software.

Assuming the .mp4 are legal, you might want to consider professional recovery, akin to what forensics use. They will hack the data without using the native OS.
