I'd not come across this speech by Peter Shore before so forgive me if it has been posted or quoted here previously.

I don't agree with him on everything, but he could certainly see what was coming.

Wouldn't it be great if we could have a return to serious conviction politics rather than having to suffer the vacuous self serving career suits of today.

Or the shorter conclusion to his speech

What a speech!

If you've read Strauss & Howe's 'Fourth Turning', it gives a possible generational explanation of why there are no longer conviction politicians like that any more. You might actually see a return to that when the Millennials reach elder statesman age, but the boomers and X-ers are largely cohorts of self-serving flakes and nihilistic cynics respectively...

Wait until we they get the right in power. Burkas will just be the start.

The krauts have some form when it comes to tings like that.

Only a question of time now, right across Europe.

I liked the ex military MP pointing out that all plans survive only until you engage with the enemy (a military metaphor). A fine pass we have come to when metaphors are taken literally by supposedly educated MPs

The Austrians didn't go for the right winger, though (and they really have form )

Not this time, but look at Hofer's percentage of the vote - not exactly insignificant

It's only a question of time

Vienna hasn't been bombed by muslim fanatics yet, has it?

The people with proper form are the Lithuanians and Ukrainians

1985 Vienna Airport (with thanks to Wikipedia )

Didn't Hoffer get fewer votes this time than the last disputed election?

I'll ask the Lithuanians and Ukrainians at work what they think. They are mostly worried about Putin, so far as I'm aware.

The real litmus test will be France. If they elect Le Pen, then the tide will really have turned.
