Default Mac networking question

On my mac , how do i ' share ' a usb drive to a windows machine ? Osx 10 and Xp , i cant work it out and its doing my nut in ! ive managed to share a windows drive to the mac but cant back again - and my ' googling ' today seems to have thrown up a blank...

Something to do with Samba, isn't it? Given Macs use a Unix kernel.

I'll have proper look when I get back to the hotel this evening but try typing 'sharing' into help and/or spotlight, it's pretty straightforward IIRC.

ah looks like i need some sharepoint software to ' share ' the destination... mmm no ' right click ' sharing ' make available on network option ... looks like ive got to do some typing ! not so straight forward... i bet if i was using another mac it would just ' apear ' though... grrrr

Really? I'm sure I did it really easily when I first got my Mac. I'll have a play later.

Yes, I got my Mac Mini and Macbook talking in minutes

You using 10.5? If so go to System Preferences, then Sharing.

Hi-light 'File Sharing' in the left pane

Under the 'Shared Folders' area click the + symbol and add the USB drive and then the user that can access it.

Click 'Options' and make sure SMB is on.

Now tick the 'File Sharing' checkbox to start it up you will get a green blob and a message saying 'Windows users can access your computer at smb://WHATEVER'
