Possible defences:

- Force majeure; I went bankrupt/died.
- Mistake; I thought it was an endangered cat I was buying
- Not of fit mind to enter a contract; pissed out of my head.

All most heart-rending

And the reason for only volunteering said defence now (not yet) and ignoring all communications from ebay, via text, email, voicemail and recorded snail mail, whilst leaving a lovely trail of happy normality via social media would be?

Well, exactly - he's done himself no favours!

Hence it will be interesting.

He's self-employed with significant assets so I'd say good

No, that simply says he has assets. How do you know the sheriffs or whoever will have a good chance of getting something out of him?
Unless he is a first offender and naive there is a long way between court judgement and collecting.
But keep us posted this is fun

I don't pretend to know the future

but ime it is not difficult to get money out of people who have it

it's even easier where they have assets and an interest in remaining CCJ free

I can understand that you are somewhat peeved that he has reneged on the purchase, but given that you are not actually out of pocket, the lengths that you are going to "punish" him makes me uncomfortable. Would naming and shaming not have been revenge enough?
Just my opinion
