Oil temp. vs. water temp.

There have been several posts scattered around this forum about how long you should warm up your engine before hammering into vtec territory. I had an interesting experience today that "proves" that just getting the coolant up to temperature may not be enough.
I drove a new Audi A4 1.8T for the day, at many different speeds and in all types of situations. What I discovered was that the coolant temperature gauge would show "normal" when the car had traveled anywhere from .9 miles to 2 miles, but that the oil temperature gauge didn't show "normal" until somewhere between 5.5 and 12 miles. This is pretty consistent with what we used to do with our race cars: take it easy for a couple of laps
