I watched a 25 min demo video of the game that was taken from E3. The game looks absolutely amazing. When I was at E3 I didn't want to wait in a 4 hour line to watch the presentation...but from what I heard it was well worth it.

Yup. In half life one he was a sort of "administrator" of black mesa who played some enigmatic role in the alien invasion.
Half life 2 is supposed to reveal what that role was, along with more stuff

Ok at the end of Half Life, the scientist is on a train. He gets to choose to join the alien bounty hunters or not. If you choose the bounty hunter one, game over wait till half life 2 to find out. If you don't join them, you die. Hmmm what choice do you have....
