...frustrated. Who has a 23 mm wrench in their toolbox? I got the car up on the jackstands to change the diff. fluid and and the socket is too long and won't fit. I went to the auto parts store - no 23 mm wrench. Home Depot has 22, 24, 25,, 27 - no 23 mm wrench. Fail - fluid unchanged. Good news - I did try the fill plug before the drain plug.

Pretty sure you don't wanna come all the way to Cleveland to borrow one. However I'm thinking ours is craftsman, not snap on, or anything like that. Maybe call local Sears. Also pretty sure we have a short socket that's works

Thanks Rick. Cleveland is kind of a haul to borrow a wrench. I ordered one for $8 on ebay. Finding the time and the will to dig into that project again will probably take a while, but at least I'll have all the right tools next time.

I was about to suggest Amazon Prime or ebay. I have one in Marysville, but honestly, easiest to just order the strange tools online and skip the running around hassle.

Getting ready to watch the PWC race from Barber

t777jb 04-24-2016 05:53 AM

...happy to be done greasing the shifter. That rubber cover over the 3 10mm bolts was the bane of my existence for about 20 minutes. Trying to hold that cover up while pushing the shifter down with one hand and getting a bolt into a hole you can't see without misaligning the metal plate with your other hand...difficult to say the least. Once I figured out to put it in reverse it wasn't too bad. Not a huge difference but shifting is slightly smoother. I'd recommend this project if you don't know when or if it has ever been done to your car.

t777jb 04-26-2016 04:18 AM

...the proud owner of a 23 mm wrench which I used to finally change the diff. oil last night. Easy project with the right tools. The oil that came out looked awful and there was a glob of gunk on the drain plug with lots of metal flakes in it. I'm guessing it may not have ever been changed. Mine is a 2000 with 63K. Straub Honda in WV told me they changed all the fluids when I bought it from them last month - no way did they change that diff. fluid.
Also - after 2 full days of driving the car with the re-greased shifter, it is noticeably better. The old grease looked ok, but there wasn't much in there. I packed it full of the urea grease and it is much smoother. The foam insulator came out in tiny pieces - $32.00 for a new one - IT'S A PIECE OF FOAM!
Next week it goes into the soft top shop to see if they can salvage the horrific job Straub did putting a new top on it.

glad you took the time to change out the fluids I really think there is peace of mind knowing that you did them. I would be giving them a call and chewing their ass out for lying to you. Maybe get some compensation for it.

Great! We got 34th overall out of 100 and 27th in the endurance racing portion. We beat a lot of D1 Engineering state schools. For the third year of the program we're all really happy.

...still chasing a solution to the not perfect shifting mechanism in my car. I ordered some ATE brake fluid and am going to change the clutch fluid based on Billmans advice - just going to suck the old stuff out, but not bleed it. Sounds like guys have had success with this by doing it and then driving some and then doing it again etc, until it all ends up clean. I'm also going to take the play out of the clutch per his advice. Anybody done these and how were the results?

It doesn't like to go into first when completely stopped - if I slide it into first just as I'm stopping, no problem. It also makes a decent thunk going into 1st when I am completely stopped...sometimes. There is a small amount of bite going into second and a little more going into 3rd. Half the time I don't feel it in 2nd, but you always feel it going into 3rd. It's less noticeable in both gears at higher RPM's. Greasing the shifter helped overall feel, but didn't really affect the aforementioned issues. I'm guessing it is more of a synchro problem, but it's not bad enough to get into that kind of repair. I can live with it like this for quite a while, but smoother would be nice. I found some posts where Billman said the fluid change and play adjustment will fix just this type of problem.

Gotcha. slightly off topic but I tried a handful of shift knobs and I ran into an issue with 1st gear grinding, occasional gear pop-out, etc. so I went back to the OEM shift knob and the issue went away.

Walnut! The only way to go!!

t777jb 05-06-2016 05:11 AM

...up to 3 metric wrenches in the toolbox. I used the 12mm to adjust the clutch last night. Got rid of most of the first stage of play, but didn't get it all so I'm looking forward to shoehorning myself into the expansive footwell again. It's shifting much better and the clutch feels better now too. I also replaced the clutch fluid again after driving about 50 miles since the last change. It was somewhat dirty after 50 miles. I think after I do this another time or 2, it will be all cleaned up. This method seemed a lot easier than jacking it up and crawling under there to bleed it. The best thing I did last night was to put a new foam insulator around the shifter. The old one was partially disintegrated and came out in little pieces when I greased the shifter. I was on the fence about getting one of these pieces of foam at $30, but I couldn't stand it not being right so I bought it, and it makes a huge difference. It seems to cut the clutch buzz noise in half. The clutch fluid, the clutch adjustment, and the insulator are all very easy and inexpensive projects that have made a big difference.
Took the locking nut off the shift rod and the knob goes a lot lower. I like it much better and it even lined up correctly when it was screwed all the way down.
I have a bunch of walnut trees in the back yard so next time I take a branch off, I'll work on carving a new shift knob. That should only take me a couple years.

...trying to diagnose a random idling issue...the S has progressively started to get a funky idle, and its intermittent. No check engine lights. Havent done anything modification wise/maintenance wise recently that would've affected my idle. Any ideas? IACV?? It will idle high (15-1800 rpms) then come down slow until it dies. Have to restart it, comes back on immediately, but the idle is still not where it should be. Anyone else experience this issue? Stumped at the moment... :banghead:

I'm not having that issue, but I've noticed the S is sluggish on a cold start, until I rev it. Then it's fine.

it acts like its going to die? like "chugs" for a sec, until you rev it? ive experienced that as well. This particular issue is when the car is at temp, very annoying. I dont want to drive it until i figure it out.

...feeling much better about my convertible top...nervous about these storms coming in today. Please don't hail. I picked up the S at J&J Auto Upholstery this morning. He re-installed my top since the Honda dealer where I bought the car did such an awful job with it. It's much better. Super nice guy and he didn't charge me much for the work. He had done some S tops before and seemed to know quite a bit about them. I'd recommend him. I don't have time to run the car home now though. Please don't hail.

So...update on the idling issue. Picked up a PCV, Spark plugs, and brake cleaner to clean the IACV. Installed all of this last night and went for a drive....so far so good...i even disconnected the battery for a couple of minutes to reset. It seems *crosses fingers* that the issue has been resolved. Going to drive it a bit more this weekend to test.

Well in that case: Damn snowy, cold, wet weather better be gone by Wednesday. I wanna hit up PIRC. Actually, I want to go Wednesday and Friday. Thinking about renting a trailer. But man, these Uhaul trailer rentals cost too damn much. How many of you drive your S2k to the track?

That worked for a while. I have an aluminum open trailer because I go so often. Bluebarchetta has a pretty pimp enclosed. I know there was a bunch who drove to Mid Ohio a couple weeks ago. I also observed someone loading a WRX onto one of those U Haul trailers. Sketchy would be the most polite way to word it.

Wondering when summer will arrive..

Yeah, I've used one of those U-hauls before; when I bought the car. Picked it up in Michigan on a cold, snowy day.

And I agree smokey...needs to warm up.

I think I drove to my first 2 track days. Towed after that. Always concerned how I'd get home if I broke something. If budget is tight, a steel or used alum could pay for themselves fairly quick. After deciding I'd be at the track frequently, I stepped up to the enclosed. Side benefit is its a great place to get out of the weather and take naps

I have been lucky enough to find a few friends with trailers to borrow. if someone borrows my truck though i send them to uhaul. their trailers have inertia brakes and makes me feel like they wont have to know how to use my trailer brake controller.

JBamin 05-15-2016 08:40 PM

on that note, I have been looking to sell my truck to upgrade, looking at 250 longbeds.. 150 is great for homestead stuff but the odo stopped working at 250k. i think long trips may be coming to a close, no more trips to iowa to pull a car home.

Kirk180 05-16-2016 04:15 AM

It's always good to know someone with a trailer JBamin. I don't have that luxury right now. However, I am keeping an eye on Craigslist. I just don't feel that comfortable with driving to the track after driving all the way home from PIRC a few weeks ago...with a misfire. :/

Anyone going to PIRC this Wednesday?

I rented a similar trailer to this, to haul a small backhoe. it was 61 dollars for the weekend. Pick up Friday after 12:00pm and dropped back off Monday before 8. It had a surge brake, so no electric trailer brake needed. just sayin, my 2 cents.
