I am not that impressed with the M3s 6MT. It's a lot nicer with the UUC SSK, but the Porsche feels much more like ours now.
I do like the activity and involvement with a 6MT (not really considering the CLK55), but the technology of the SMG is awesome. Plus, perfect rev-matches and ultra fast shift is cool. It's more involving and more fun than a normal tiptronic.
It's definitely down to the M3 and 911... 911 is definitely an icon, but the M3 is more refined. Thanks! Keep the comments coming!
Here's my reasoning. I have an S2000 and I love it for the fun little roadster that it is. The S4 is the perfect complement to the S2000. It is the yang to the S2000 yin. Heavy vs. light. Tail-happy vs. slight understeer. Sedan vs. roadster. Smooth vs. frenetic. Practical vs. impractical.
Torquey with the V8 - four doors - all weather capable - not too flashy so I don't have problems with using the car for business. I can pick up my customers without them thinking that I make too much $$$ like they did when I had an '03 E320.
For some reason driving a Benz seemed to put off a few of my clients. On top of that the M-B was a total piece of sh!t. That car was in for service every 8 weeks. I couldn't wait to turn it in.
I rarely say never but I doubt I'll ever own another Mercedes.
The S4 in 9 months and 12000 miles has been nearly flawless. The only non-scheduled service item has been slightly leaky valve covers. The 4 year, 50000 mile free maintenance has really been nice. My service advisor has been real asset - I always get 10 quarts of synthetic instead of dino oil when they service my ride.
It is tight and is far better assembled than my M-B was. It's not as fun as an M3 though.
IMO the E46 M3 is still one of the better looking cars on the road. In some ways it strikes me as something of an overweight, hardtop 4 seat S2000. I'd probably have one if I only had to have one car.
Ultimately I think I will have a 997S or Cayman S. No real desire for a 996 (except for the GT3) Too many problems and ugly as hell headlights.
my .25 cents.
In all seriousness - this poll is kind of pointless unless you specify what attributes you want and how you plan on using your next car.

No kidding. For instance, the car I would buy is an Exige. But there is no way on Earth that is the car I would recommend to Wyatt. (Well, OK, one way -- Wyatt, please buy an Exige and then decide it is not the car for you, and sell it to me at a 25% price reduction....) But a Cayman S would also be very cool!
Keep in mind that all of these cars are very expensive to maintain, so if the purchase price is in any way a stretch financially, you can't afford them.
Lig, I love the S4... But it will be my only car, so I think it wont work too well for me. If I kept the S2000, I would agree with you 110%. But since I am selling the S, I need something to replace it (in what it does for me so well).
I buy cars full at start... and the maintenance among them is equal (100k engine warranty on m3, but thats all). Expensive, but I can afford it. Gas? Just the price to enjoy it.
What am I looking for?
A sporty car, with a little more finesse, style, or class. I love the S2 and do not care about the practicality. If I could afford to keep it, I would!
Why not get a Boxster S? You still have top down fun and it's a P-car?
If you want more status than a Honda can provide - that would be a good choice along with an M3.
It's still a little girly but the new SLK350 is pretty nice. A used SL500 would be pimp. My brother's SL with the factory sport kit, a 1.5" drop and the 20" HREs looks amazingly good.
I wish I could afford the SL500 (current bodystyle)!!!
I would NEVER consider a Boxster, or get a non-AMG Mercedes. For that matter, nor would I consider a non-M BMW either. Hmmm...
It's not that I am looking for more status... I just want something different now. I'm young still, so my interests change far too rapidly. These are the cars that are in my price range and fit the requirements.
But then I find myself saying NOTHING is more fun to drive than the S2000... So who knows.
Sorry Rich, the Evo9 is fast and looks great... But it's got 4 doors and cloth seats.
