clutch replacement places?
hey guys,
as embarassed as i am to say this, i think its the beginning of the end of my clutch. 18k miles and i need to replace it. my only excuse is that this was my first manual.
anywho, any places i should go without spending $500+ for labor? i kno, HoB... i should go there... i gotta get an estimate from them but im guessing they'll charge 8 hours labor @ $75/hr now? i kno acura went to $110/hr up in lynnwood
id like to change the clutch myself, but i have never ever done anything like that, nor remotely close to dropping an engine, taking a tranny off, taking off a clutch, etc... but maybe someone would be willing to supervise me? ray? the resident technician?
anyways, TIA!

Hop on the ferry and come on out to my place and we'll tackle it. If you feel more comfortable being in a shop, we'll put it on a lift out at my brother in-laws place. He's a mechanical genius if you can get around his 24/7 drunkenness and profane sense of humor. Maybe Brant will join in for his Miata clutch. Let me know and I'll see what time he has available. He can get busy since he runs the d-derby association out here so it may be a few days wait to get it in.

sounds good to me marcus. thanks. did you kno that a new clutch only costs ~$80 on handa? i thought i'd cost much more. so how many times have you done this?
on a side note, is the throwout bearing usually replaced as well? is there anything else that is normally replaced besides the clutch when the clutch is changed?

Oh sure, ask the hard questions. As I said, come out and we'll tackle it. I've never done it. All I've got is the ESM and an ever growing sense of the vehicles engineering as I tear it apart and put it back together.
If we put this far enough out (next month) I'll be changing my clutch out as well and we can do mine first, then yours so that way if we get lost/confused it'll be mine that's down, not yours. It would suck if you couldn't get home.

Clutch replacement party? I'm in! I have no issues with a drunk and profane mechanic as long as he's got the skills and used to working in that condition...
Might as well replace the bearings while you're in there. They're cheap and a pain in the @$$ if they fail before the clutch and you have to pull the whole mess all over again. Depending on use, you may find that the flywheel needs to be machined, but you won't know until you get in there.
I've got my clutch and bearings sitting on the floor here in my office. Lemme know when it might work to do this and I'll wander over...

very true marcus. im not planning on doing this right away. the main point of this thread was to find a collection of local places, besides the dealerships, where i could have this work done well. ideally, i wanted to hear opinions on different shops people may have experimented with. but nothing yet...
i feel my clutch going, so hopefully i can last til next month. i think it'll survive that long tho. and if we do it ourselves, then i know i wont have to purchase other parts right away (ie, toda flywheel) should i want to get those mods. if i want those mods, we can just have ourselves another tranny day! haha
