Seattle area Meet 'N' Crazy Drive

Hey northwest S2000 owners, join us on Thursday June 14 at 7:30pm at the Factoria Mall (Bellevue) Billy McHale's (next to the Big 5 sporting goods).

update: some of us will show up at 6:30 to eat before.

We'll take a Crazy Drive on a route of Jerry's creation. We'll drive at questionable speed along such thrilling thoroughfares at Cougar Mountain Way, Coal Creek Parkway, Devil's Elbow, Hobart Road, and others better left unnamed.

If you have an FRS (talkabout) radio, remember to bring it. Some of us will probably stop for food after sufficient Crazy Driving.

So far the attendees are:

Ben - "SpaceNeedle"
Ted & Daryl - "Tedster"
Ken - "KenS2K" (not sure)
Ray - "RT"
? - "SeattleSilver"
Jerry - "jerrypeterson"
Lawrence - "lawrence" (50% chance)
"Banannie" - Annie & "ronbauer" - Ron

If anyone else can join us, please post to this topic, and I'll update the list.

See you there!

Ted

Beware that porky joe has been running speed traps pretty regularly on I-90 between the Bellevue and Issaquah exits on nice days. Not uncommon to find one bike unit hiding in the center bushes with radar and a dozen or more other units lined up just off the freeway somewhere to do the ticketing.

Saw a row of motorcycles all get pulled over the other day.

I'll be there.

jerrypeterson 06-07-2001 01:36 PM

Duly noted as that will be the transit route for the start of the run. Not a good idea to speed on that stretch since there is a Highway patrol station in Eastgate. The rest of the route is back roads with fabulous territorials. There will be a pair of good photo ops on the route. Don't forget your camera.

Pray for sun!

RT 06-11-2001 10:02 PM

I don't have to wash my car, do I?

ScottB 06-12-2001 08:25 AM

If this weather keeps up, I think you will get a natural wash...

WRS2K 06-12-2001 08:59 AM

I was up near those roads in the Lakemont area. It's pretty damn sweet. A little Integra with a fart pipe tried to pull away, but it was so easy just to keep up behind him.

This run sounds cool. We'll see clearing by Thursday.

Hmmm, going for Harry Wappler's job? ;)

I hope you're right. Weather.com says:

So who else will be there? KenS2K? ScottB? Anyone else?

lawrence 06-12-2001 11:17 AM

I'm about a 50 / 50 chance ...

Just like the weather ..

If we get rained out I will be VERY unhappy. No matter what I will be there though. Don't be disappointed if I drive a little slow on wet roads: I am still getting used to the car.

If it is really pouring we can all have drinks at my place, and watch the NSXFiles videos.

CarCrazy 06-12-2001 01:24 PM

Too bad I can't join you, but family obligations bring me to your area this weekend. Thought I'd jump in here and ask you a traffic question. On Thursday afternoon, I'll be heading from Seattle to Olympia.....probably about 4 - 4:30 pm. Am I going to run into some mean traffic slowdowns?? Any idea how long I should allow for that drive? Thanks!

jerrypeterson 06-12-2001 01:27 PM

If you are taking I-5 southbound expect two hours plus. This is assuming no one wrecks their car and creates more of a jam.

CarCrazy 06-12-2001 01:33 PM

 Ugh! 2 hours plus for 60-some miles. You guys have Chicago -style traffic! Thanks for the info, Jerry.

Tedster 06-12-2001 01:54 PM

OK, we'll hope to see Lawrence, and we'll catch Scott at the next event. Anyone else?

To help out with the planning for S2KDays '02 Monterey, I'll be bringing my sound meter to check our exhaust volumes from 50' and 25' distances. Ray, should be interesting to see what the decibel difference is with your supercharger/HKS exhaust.

Here's the thread: http://www.s2000online.com/forums/showthre...p?postid=183663

Ted

jerrypeterson 06-12-2001 02:13 PM

I have a feeling I am going to flunk this test.

Fabulous idea Ted.

Tedster 06-12-2001 02:49 PM

Jerry,

tell us about your exhaust...

Custom 2/12" Dual pipes into DynoMax ProFlo straight through Drag mufflers. Nakayama tips welded onto the mufflers. Each muffler is rated around 280+ cfm. The exhaust note is deep at low RPM, but changes to more of a howl above 5k. Under acceleration and at speed it doesn't sound too much louder than RT's HKS straight-pipes with the SC, though. I set off most car alarms at 25' below 3k RPM. I've reved the car in a parking garage and set off car alarms as far away as 200'.

Dynomax advertises their mufflers at 94db under full throttle. I would guess that my numbers should be in this ballpark. We should setup the meter on the side of the road and drive by at full throttle to obtain realistic results.

I am really curious what the numbers will be for a stock vs: a SC'd car. I am planning to install a SC this winter and I don't want to do this at Laguna Seca:

What do you mean? Have you EVER washed it??? :D

I might try to stop by on my way home from work, but after planting my first S2K into a cement wall at 60mph sideways, I try not to play too much on the street. But hopefully I can at least say "hi" before y'all take off!

If you're ever going from northbound 405 to westbound 520, look on the wall to the left - you should see a circle-ish mark and nice black scrape... that would be me... mental note - 90mph doesn't work well on that onramp...

Annie

Tedster 06-12-2001 06:05 PM

Jerry,

but that way you can say you have an S2000 with a V8 ;). Yeah, I'll be interested to see what our cars measure at. If Laguna Seca really measures at 50' it shouldn't be too hard to squeak (roar?) by.

Annie,

just like I never put the top up, RT never washes the S2000. Actually, I think he washed it just a few weeks ago... Hope to see you there.

Ted

WRS2K 06-12-2001 10:52 PM

What do you guys think about rescheduling this thing if it rains? Same day of the week, same time, just a different date?

I don't want to drive in the rain on twisty roads. It'd be too tough to hold back. But then, who the puck cares?

Let's do it as long as the roads are not wet.

jerrypeterson 06-13-2001 01:03 PM

I agree, I am too thrilled at the prospect of zooming around on wet roads. If the roads are wet we should postpone the drive. On the otherhand, I would really like to see everyone again. If Ted can bring the soundmeter, we can at least have some entertainment.

Getting pulled over on 520 last night sucked, but at least I didn't get a citation. I couldn't believe it is a 50mph limit on the bridge. It should be more like 100 if you are driving a stook.

Until I pick up a SC it will only sound like a V-8 ;)

Tedster 06-13-2001 02:46 PM

Jerry,

pulled over on 520 ? I gotta know about this! What time and which way? They got you for speeding? How did that work?

I go across that sucker twice a day - Eastbound in the morning, Westbound at night.

WRS2K 06-13-2001 03:02 PM

Ted, just make sure to slow down near the middle. There are cops there off and on. Not that often though. I cross that bridge many times a day going back and forth to the UW.

KenS2K 06-13-2001 03:21 PM

No wet roads for me. Otherwise I'm game.

If we have to reschedule it might work out better.

Ted, Maybe I'll have the new badges from Rick by the time we reschedule this drive.

Tedster 06-13-2001 04:08 PM

Well, as of now, weather.com's forcast is looking better. They show tomorrow afternoon/evening as mostly cloudy, upper 50s, chance of precip 20%-10%. Earlier in the day they are calling for scattered showers.

I think we have a better than even chance of dry roads, so lets not call it off yet.

Can everyone check here tomorrow afternoon? That way we can post a decision at 5PM one way or another.

Ted

jerrypeterson 06-13-2001 05:06 PM

Ted - What spaceneedle said. I was driving home at two am and they had a patrol car with radar mid-span. They were really fishing for drunks. They pulled five cars over simultaneously. I was only keeping speed with the pack, top down and loving it. When the officer found out that I hadn't been drinking, they let me go.

Frankly, I think the thing that saved me was having everything but my driver's license in the trunk. Since these cars do not have a glove box, its a pretty reasonable place to put your papers. After speaking with some of my friends in law enforcement, the feedback was that this is kosher. They also went a step further in pointing out that an officer does not want you to leave the seat of your car, nor do they want you to go fishing in your trunk after a stop. It may not save you a ticket everytime, but it has worked more than once. I have a clean driving record and I do everything possible to protect it.

Also, if anyone needs the name of a good lawyer: she has a 99% success rate on traffic offenses. Everyone of my friends uses her, and none of them have had a single case stick. She is currently defending a neg driving for one of my friends and we expect yet another victory. She just defeated a 15mph over/proof of insurance for one of the gang two weeks ago. PM me if you would like info.

Even if it rains tomorrow, I would still like to meet and get the audible readings.

WRS2K 06-13-2001 10:35 PM

It's on for tomorrow. Looks like it'll be dry.

How much does she charge per case? I have two lawyers I know and they've been successful many times over as well. THey range from 200 to 250 per ticket.

i need representation for an august court date.

Tedster 06-14-2001 01:44 PM

I'm seeing some sun!

ronbauer 06-14-2001 01:45 PM

The weather looks good to me! Annie and I are planning on attending. Annie's being wimpy about drving the car fast on public roads, so we may just drive my Miata. The S2000 will show up however for the pre-funk!

The previous info said we'd meet at 7:30, go drive and then eat. How about we instead meet at Billy McHales at 6:30 or 7:00, eat first and then go drive? If we eat after, it'll be 8:30 or 9:00 (or later....) and most people will probably eat ahead of time anyway because that'll be too late.

We don't have to have everyone meet up that early, but I'd be up for eating first. Comments?

Ron

jerrypeterson 06-14-2001 02:48 PM

Ben - Her rate is in the $250 - 350 range. She has lost one case in five years and only becuase the appeal went to the same judge somehow.

I can't make it before 7:30pm, and I will likely have to return to work after the drive. Can anyone bring a camera mount for my digital camcorder?

There is a good chance of rain in the next few hours. If it starts to rain during the drive, I will escort everyone back to Factoria Square.

Tedster 06-14-2001 03:01 PM

Ron,

good idea, we'll probably show up at 6:30 to eat. I've updated the top message to reflect that.

With the possibility of rain/wet roads and cops afoot, I don't think anyone's planning on driving 10/10ths tonight, just a spirited drive on fun roads. Please drive your S2000 with us!

Jerry,

sorry they're cracking the whip on you at work; I've been there  . No help here on the camcorder mount; I've been looking for a solution myself...

Everyone,

those who can/want to, arrive at 6:30 to eat. Everyone else, meet at 7:30 as planned for the drive.

Ted

SeattleSilver 06-14-2001 05:55 PM

Sorry S2Kers

I can't make it this evening. I droped the car off in the body shop and its getting its door ding removed.

But that means it'll be ready for the next time.

Hope you all have fun. Wish I was there. :(

DSR 06-14-2001 08:33 PM

Hey! We had a great time. I especially loved the "one lap of Bellevue Honda". Thanks for arranging the evening. Again sometime? :)

Hey,

it was great meeting some new people and seeing others again. Jerry, those were some good roads, thanks!

I'll try to post pictures tomorrow in a new thread.

Ted

Chiman 06-14-2001 10:45 PM

Again, I miss you guys. I got there at around 8:10. My dinner arrangement just took too long.
Now when is the next event??

John

KenS2K 06-14-2001 11:32 PM

Great to meet and see everyone again. Nice evening out.

Thanks for the tour Jerry. Some nice twisties. I must admit I felt like sheep a few times. Not quite sure how sharp the next turn was going to be. Fun drive.

Banannie 06-15-2001 09:11 AM

Hey RT,

Thanks for the ride, man...

... why did I want to smoke a cigarette after that? I don't even smoke! :D

Annie - new member of SA (Superchargers Anonymous) as those things are ADDICTIVE!

Tedster 06-15-2001 09:16 AM

Hey guys,

I promised Brad ("meat") that I would bring S2KCA (S2000 Club of America) applications to the drive, but I forgot 'em on my desk..

I'll bring some to the next meet, but if you're interested in joining (which will be a prerequesite for Laguna Seca next year), you can download and print your own from

http://www.s2kca.com/docs

Thanks to all those who came out.

Jerry, thanks for the cool roads. I didn't even know those existed and I wouldn't know how to get back there.

Ted, have an awesome time with your lovely wife on your cruise.

RT, you a crazy ass mofo.

Ken is the man with the shades with them chromed rims.

DSR, nice to meet you and your wife, I think?

Banannie, nice meeting you two.
I got a ride in RT's SC as well so I understand.

RT 06-15-2001 11:23 AM

Dude, she drove it :p

jerrypeterson 06-15-2001 11:28 AM

That was a great meet. Better still because every color was represented! The Washington State Patrol escort through Factoria was pretty cool too.

Our next meet should be a cruise and not a drive. We can hit all of the popular cruise spots in town on a sunny day and leave everyone wishing they were driving in an s2k. Would could plan a few good photo ops and make an afternoon of the the event. It might even be worthwhile to contact one of the dealerships or speedshops and see if they would sponsor an event of somekind.

I quench that urge by smoking the tires instead ;)

On several occasions you were gaining on Ron and I so fast that I thought for sure you were going to rear end us

Glad you enjoyed it!

You

ronbauer 06-15-2001 10:58 PM

Yes, RT, I loved your car. Like I said when I got out of it, it was deceptively fast. It didn't really feel faster, but man it got to redline FAST!!

After watching you and your tire smoking, I wanted to do it too, but didn't want to get crazy on the street. Maybe in a more controlled environment.

Everyone else, it was great meeting you and I still keep thinking of the people we passed (especially at Honda of Bellevue) that had this look of terror in their eyes. I'm sure it wasn't terror, but it definitely was quite humorous to see.

I'm all for getting together again, and though those roads were fun, I vote for non-residential areas next time. I don't blame the one guy for being a little upset with us! Of course going down 30 mph roads (non-residential....) at 100 was pretty cool.... :D

I look forward to the next time, and hope to see some or all of you at the autocross on Sunday!

Ron
