+1 for homeowner's policy (or renter's). Check your policy. Mine covers a $5K limit with no extra rider required. Sure it won't cover professional use but fine for personal travel.

I need it for professionals (although Im not REALLY a pro) I still get paid gigs, and I would hate to lose a gig because I dont have insurance. You cant get insurance in NY with anything less than 1mm in liability, or else no one will accept it.

I have State Farm personal property coverage. I would advise you to separate this from your home if you use it professionally, any claims goes against your home owners.
I have ~ 10,000 of coverage for about $98 bucks a year; non-professional. Every nickel of coverage requires you to fax in the receipt.

Photo.net has an insurance discount. See how it stacks up to what else you find.

I have very different coverage because I am under the umbrella of my primary business (architectural flooring company) and I am covered by Chubb & Son. I do NOT recommend the policy for just equipment and general liability thought because it's $$$$$
One big thing to look out for when purchasing photo insurance: Make sure it will cover you for the loss, theft, or destruction of rental equipment!

Got a quote for $591 a year for...
$7000 in equipment
$3000 for computer and data
$5000 for rental
1 million liability
Worldwide coverage, etc.
Sounds decent no?

Ehm. I'd like to insure mine but I don't think I can afford to go this route. I think if I do what Alex has done I would be better off than nothing at all. State Farm has been good to me and with receipts it is hard for them to dispute values, no?
