friend looking for a camera
ok she's looking for a good camrea. Either dslr or a p+s. I was looking into the canon g7 or the sony dsc-h9 as a p+s or an xti for a dslr. She's only got a budget of about $600 so im sure the dslr's are out. I think she wants to buy new only. Can anyone recomend something? I told hr to get a 30d but thats like double her budget lol.

Id steer her away from the Xti, as the spending snowball starts to roll quickly. Have her look at the H9 or the DMC-FZ50K from Panasonic. Manual zoom rings/focus rings are very SLRish....so is the hotshoe.
The Panny is a better camera, with a better lens AND shoots RAW, but the Sony is easier to get quality shots....that is until you learn the basics. Both have the option of add on lenses.
Id recommend the panny. IMHO, it is a better camera than an Xti with a kit lens.

Here comes the sexist question (sorry), but what's more important to her... A camera with manual controls that she can artistically capture images with and is willing to schlep, or a camera that she will take everywhere and will fit into her bag at the sacrifice of flexibility and possibly printed image quality?

she wants something with more a manual mode and be able to take great photos and not have to deal with changing lenses.
