Just bought a T1i
I am sure people have asked this very question tons of times but it seems that the threads are culled in this sub forum?
I have been looking into buying a DSLR but i already had a decent mega zoom and couldn't bring myself to buy a DSLR. Last weekend my mega zoom was stolen . So I ordered a T1i body only and a 50 mm prime lens.
Now onto my question about the lenses. I like to shoot landscapes, cars, and macro stuff. What lenses would you guy suggest for these specific tasks? Although I would love to buy L lenses but i really dont want to spend that much right now. I just want a lens/lenses that will out shoot my old Panasonic lumix dmz28.
Also would the 18-55 kit lens be worth 50$ or should I just save my money.
Here are a few examples of what I was able to do with the Panasonic.

just use your 50mm for a while its all you need for what your shooting. Personally I could live with just a 50mm.
just one last thing your a newbie gont get sucked into the lens game stick with a couple of primes and hone your craft.

Hi, I recently bought a T2i with the 18-135mm kit lens. At the time I wasn't sure if I should buy the cheaper 18-55mm kit lens or step up to the 18-135mm. Well after doing some different shooting for the past month, I'm really glad I went for the 18-135mm. I played with a 18-55mm in a store & it felt limited due to the lower telephoto range. I went to a NFL scrimmage & did some shooting. I felt the 55mm would have kept me from getting many of the shots that I got. This lens has been a awesome carry around lens. I can get decent up close shots of flowers/bugs & get the long shots of sports/cars. I think the only lens I really want is the 1.8 50mm that you already have due to it being cheap & also has good aperture. I feel these two lenses cover about 99% of the situations I'll run into. Hope this helps.

I m in the same boat I just got a T1i last weekend. I m taking a photography class this semester. I ve got the kit lens, 18-55mm and enjoy it so far. I love shooting everything. I would like a all around lens. So subscribed to thread!

the 35 1.8 is decent. May be a bit more than you're willing to spend, but it's small, compact, and takes great photos. Will give you a bit more wider perspective than the plastic fantastic (50mm).

I would get a Tamron 17-50 F2.8 as your first piece of glass. It is L glass quality (optically) and I should know, I own both. This will give you EXCELLENT shots for day to day shooting, and is a great starter lens. Once you up the bank account a bit more, you can move on to the 70-200 lenses. Just my .02
