More Panning shots
 

I was at Goodwood yesterday on a trackday, thought I'd use the opportunity to try some panning shots, inspired by some of the ones on here. . .

It's a bit hard to judge your technique because of the length of glass you had on hand. I am a strong believer of not croping images because it hurts you in the long run if you should later decide to print and enlarge a shot, but in this case, I feel you have to in order to see what worked and what did not. Personally, I like to see a lower perspective in relation to the car. Lower your stance, as it will help to add a sense of drama.. Also, open your aperture a bit as to help isolate your subject matter from the background which in this case does not add to the feel of the image.

Also, adding a slight tilt takes away from what is typical (but is also personal pref)

I was using a 28-105 (my only lense at present) and was in Tv mode, so only set the shutter speed.

Would I be better off in Av and changing the aperture instead?

Or scary full M - manual :eek3:

Problem for angles was that I was on a raised bank and taking the shots over the top of the fence, but still appreciate the tip.

No tripod, so all just hand held and just followed the cars round.

Like the tilted 355 - looks good :)

Next time you are faced with a fence try this... Get as close as possible to the fence (even if you have to remove the hood on the lens) open aperture as much as possible (f/2.8) and shoot MANUAL! :) Watch the fence dissapear...... Last year I didn't have press creds and shot the Canadian GP through 2 of them!

A good lens to get started (rent it if you can) is the 300 f/2.8 Long enough to get you close, but not too big that its hard to hand-hold.
