Default My first DSLR

I am going to be buying my first DSLR in December and wanted to get some input. I think I have it narrowed down to 2. Either the Rebel XTi or the Nikon D80. Right now from the research I am doing I am leaning towards the Nikon. Anyone have any advice for me? Also becuase money will be a little tight can you reccomend a good all around lense that would be good. Thank you so much.

Get them both in your hand and see how they feel - holding it and using the controls is an important part of the camera.

If you buy the D80 you can't go wrong with the Nikkor 18-70 mm f4 kit lens. I recommend it as noticeably better than the 18-55 & 55-200 kit lens combo. It is good enough, if you can live with f4 aperture and 70 mm max length, that your technique will be the limiting factor.

My D80 arrived last Saturday and so far I am delighted with it. Picture quality is great and I am sure the main limit to decent pictures will be me and not the camera. As AE says, see how they both feel. I found the Nikon was far easier for me with big hands.

I went for the 18-135 kit lens with mine which seems to get fairly good reviews.

I usually like to buy the best for my money.

I personally, trust CNET, because I like the way they review products, and IMHO, are very strict with their ratings..... that said, they did a comparo of the Xti vs the D80, and the D80 was better in every category.

I'm not a fan a super-wide-range zooms (that's 18-200 !) because of design compromises but that would be a one-lens solution.

For a review on the D80:
http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/nikon/d80-review/

For a review on the 400D:
http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/canon/di...iew/index.shtml

I just purchased the Canon 400D 2mos. ago. If I had to do it all over again, I would have bought the Canon 30D. At the time I didn't know about spot metering & the quality of the view finder, all of which is better on the 30D than on the 400D.

If I had to choose between the 400D vs. D80, I would go for the D80.
D80 pros over the 400D:
- Better build
- Larger size
- Better viewfinder

I won't get into the differences between the D80 and XTi, but here are the general differences between Canon and Nikon. Hopefully you will be able to go by these and decide which types of photographs you're going to take the most of. These general differences are not big differences at all though.

Canon's get higher ratings in ISO quality - not as grainy at higher ISO's. The higher the ISO, the faster the shutter speed you can use in low-light situations. Canon's are typically hailed as being better at motion/sports photography. Nikon's are typically hailed as better for portraits and still photography.

Look at the sidelines of a sporting event and Nikon is a very small minority to non-existent. Look at what Newspaper photographers shoot with and you'll find tons of Nikon's. It is best to start with one or the other and decide to stick with it because you'll pick up a lens collection as you go, and it is much cheaper to buy new camera bodies, than it is to switch out the entire arsenal.

I'm a Canon shooter, and I picked up the Rebel XT when it originally came out. After about two weeks I exchanged it for a 20D - the XT hurt my hand after a few shots (too small). I absolutely love the 20D, and have not been able to justify changing it out yet. If buying new, then we'd be talking about the XTi vs. the 30D like iLuveketchup said.
