Not sure if you want to DIVE right into photography with an SLR/DSLR camera if you know NOTHING about it. its kinda up to you
I would recommend starting with a Canon G7 or G9 which is a great camera to learn with, if you must have a DSLR try a Canon XTi.
The only book you really need to read is the manual for the camera. Read it about 2 or 3 times while looking over the camera and its different settings. The manual will tell you what each function does and why. Once you learn the basics then you can come here and post images for feedback or join fredmiranda.com and get great info and feedback there too.
SLR = single-lens reflex/ D = Digital
SLR cameras most distinctive feature is the interchangeable lenses
They are much more versatile than Point and shoot cameras too.
My other bit of advice is to take a basics of digital photography at the local community college if you have one. Even though i went to school for photography, when I went digital I took a class at the local college so that I could be challenged to learn the capabilities of my camera and compete with my classmates for the best shots for each assignment. having that healthy competition motivated me in more ways than you know.
It will also help you decide if you are happy with your current gear or require something more powerful.
1 thing to remember - photography is in your head. if you dont see the photo in your head before you shoot it, its probably not going to be a keeper. Train yourself to find the beauty in everything you shoot and you will always have success.
Computer skills are also important, take a photoshop class if you can.

I agree about taking a class. I took one from the local rec center. True, I didn't learn much, if anything, that I hadn't seen in a book or online. But, the fact that the class had assignments forced me to take pictures with very specific goals in mind. Actually going out and taking the pictures is so much better than reading about it and thinking, "Yeah, I get that." Plus, I was forced to take some types of pictures that I normally wouldn't have taken.
