I believe the D40 does not use the standard Nikon lens mount, and thus cannot use other Nikkor lenses - I'm not a 100% sure of this, but fairly sure. This should figure in your purchase decision.
The D50 is a good camera, as someone suggested.....I started with it, and would vouch for that.

Rockwell is a blowhard who states his opinions as if they were facts. It doesn't make his site bad for noobs. Just read him with a grain of salt.

Read widely. Fred & Miranda, Photo.net, Luminous Landscape, Nikonians (esp. for Nikon shooters).

The last piece of nonsense I read of his was his claim the Nikkor 70-300 ED version did not, in fact, contain an ED element. Now I agree the image quality is so-so but he was flat-out wrong.
