I believe the D40 does not use the standard Nikon lens mount, and thus cannot use other Nikkor lenses - I'm not a 100% sure of this, but fairly sure. This should figure in your purchase decision.
The D50 is a good camera, as someone suggested.....I started with it, and would vouch for that.
D40 has the standard lens mount, but as someone mentioned above, it does not have a lens focus motor in the body. This isn't a problem if you only use DX lenses, or any others that have their own focus motor. Older lenses, and the cheap and versatile 50mm 1.8, can't be autofocused on the D40.

As for MP, it matters, but isn't always the most important, especially if you don't make large prints. Especially with compact cameras, with small sensors, too many MP can actually be a negative.

And re Rockwell - agree with the poster that said take him with a grain of salt. I think he does have useful information, especially for beginners, but he does have a way of speaking rather authoritatively on matters that are subjective and should clearly be expressed as merely his opinions.

http://gizmodo.com/5612401/nikon-d3100-lea...and-1080p-video

"The EXPEED 2 image processor will allow it to reach light sensitivities of ISO 100 to 12,800" retarded!

the 1080p upgrade with continuous autofocus is gonna be cool too but im sure you guys know how to read. personally i cant wait for the D95. Gonna break my D90 that still on BestBuy protection plan and get $899 credit and use it towards an estimated $1200 D95

I know a lot of people here seem to like Nikon, and I know they make a great product. I used to have a D60 for a little while. However after shoting with it for a while I felt like the body didn't fit in my hand the right way.

That's when I decided to buy an Olympus E-520. If you are looking for a good inexpensive entry level camera which has great lenses available, I could recommend the Olympus E-520/E-620.

I know many of you might not like Olympus due to the smaller sensor size inherent to the 4/3 system, but I find it takes great shots even at ISO 800.

What I like about my E-520 is that it has both the Image Stabilization and Auto Focus in the body. Also, the Zuiko line of lenses are really good, especially the 14-54mm, the 40-150mm and the 70-300mm which can be had for great prices. Also, most of the controls liek the ISO, AF, WB and , etc are in the form of buttons and not buried in menus.

Again, this is just my opinion, but I just wanted to contribute a little bit to your thread with what I find is a good alternative for the money.

When reading reviews, whatever, always remember, they are written by SOMEONE else, and are usually always going to be biased. Be it on this site, or wherever. So, basically, trust those you feel are trustworthy. Be it on here, or wherever you decide.

Luminous Landscape is a great resource, as is Fred Miranda.
