Default Tamron 17-50 f2.8 XR Di II

Well the guy who only owns the 50/1.8 is finally getting a new lens in the next few weeks. I had my heart set on getting the 70-200 4L for a while due to the great value, However, I'm starting to have second thoughts. I've found myself much more frustrated with my lack of wide angle than zoom.

Probably my favorite thing to shoot is closeups of animals but that opportunity does not present itself often. The majority of photos I take are outside landscapes, buildings, etc. Besides, with a wide angle I can always just get closer to that tiger. He looks friendly.

So I got to shopping around again, in about the same price range (400-550) and came upon the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 XR Di II. It looks like a nice lens and the-digital-picture.com seems to like it, but I wanted any opinions from you guys since I trust you more than the photo pros

So, 70-200L? Tamron 17-50 2.8XR? Sigma 18-50 2.8EX macro? Sigma 200-500 2.8EX? Sell my camera and give up?

By the way, these lenses will be on an APS-C sensor camera (XT).

You know what, never mind. After doing more research on this lens (mostly at POTN) i'm completely sold. Everyone is saying it is a great deal, incredibly sharp, and right up there with the 17-40L on everything except build quality and noise level of focusing.

I think having a better walk-around lens than my 50/1.8 should be my priority at the moment.

If you have any opinions/examples to share, please do so, but I think this is probably the one for me.

Are these known to have inconsistent quality?
