If you currently take a lot of pictures in 24-28mm range you will want a WA lens or need to change your shooting style.

I went from the Elan IIe to a 30D and the only thing that caught me by surprise was the 1.6x crop factor. The 28-135 I had used 80% of the time was useless, on the 30D, for indoor snap shots.

If you use the eye focus you'll miss it in the 30D but will adapt quickly find it's not that big a loss.
the 17-55 EF-S f2.8 IS is a great lens for this range

30D is a great buy for 1000. A 30D, and a $400 walkaround, and youll be all set. Budget about 3K for the "basics" though.
3k for basics? thats a little excessive i think. you can get spare memory cards, a descent tripod, a bag and filters for $500. some people like to spend money though and i say let em. its not going to make them a better photographer (might help though ). you probably already have most of the "basics" though, since you've been shooting film.

Only oddballs go with Nikon, get Canon for its better high ISO performance. with your existing Canon lenses should help making your decision whole lot easier.

Nikon focuses on optics, optical instruments. Canon also makes fax, copiers and calculators.

Zeiss... it will be the whole JDM vs Euro thing again.

I do have a kit already, but I do want a nice 400 or 500 lens, a fast prime lens, some more filters, etc. that can add up to an additional +$1k quickly.

A body, and two decent lenses is 3Kish. Add a flash, 3400, etc. Its a snowball that gets big quickly, BELIEVE me.

for the price, you can't go wrong with that camera. you can learn the manual controls, exposure, aperture settings, metering, etc.... and eventually learn for yourself what the limitations are on that camera. but for now, great choice.
