Shooting at the dragon is something I stopped doing since I would rather hang out with people I don't get to see as well as meet new people. Killboy (as do some of the other shooters) do an amazing job shooting so I have no interest hanging out on the side of a road. I'd rather have a beer at the cabin with friends
I have my RX100 point and shoot... that does plenty for the Dragon

First thing I would do. Go play around with shots in auto and look at your settings. From there understand the relationship between shutter speed, aperture and ISO. Why makes what do what. Then from there, " modify" your shot.
Good luck. Happy shooting.

The best and FREE learning guide, to my belief anyway, is the instruction manual that came with your camera.
I've read it over many times since I bought my camera and to this day I still find myself going through it and learning new things.

After about two years sans camera I got a new Canon G7X for Christmas this year.
I started out with a Nikon D40, then a Canon 40D, then a 5D Mk1, Nikon D3000, 5D Mk2, Sony RX100. I never kept DSLRs around very long because I would end up getting a ton of money wrapped up in my kit and then it just sat in the closet the majority of the time. I hated taking a kit on vacation or on any excursion that wasn't just to take pictures so I got rid of everything................and bought a set of TE37s for the S.
Anyway, the quality of point and shoots has really come a long way so I got a G7X to mess around with. Full manual control, decent bokeh, nice image quality and it fits in my jeans pocket.

So far I'm really happy with it, still need to take it out around town and see what it can do, but I love what you can do now with a camera that fits in your pocket.

Just stumbled into this thread today. Good read.
I have been using a Nikon D90 for the past 5 years. I have the standard kit lenses (no longer use the 55-200mm) and occasionally will use the 18-55 for interior shots or engine bay shots (things that requiring a wider angle).
I typically shoot with my 50mm 1.8 and 80-200mm 2.8.

Which reminds me. 85mm 1.4 is back ordered again so I picked up some other stuff I needed.
