... The D50 is retailing for $549 while a Canon 10D is $799. I have shot professionally with the 10D for the past 2 years. The difference in price is marginal and it's the right tool for the job (if) he is looking to capture action shots or track moving subjects.

Im ready to buy a digital camera finally. I mostly want to use it to take pics of cars or events that I go to related to cars (such as D1). Anybody have a suggestion for a good digital camera for my needs below $400? Thanks!

Yeah it's big, but if you want to capture motion shots and get good close-ups, you'll need a high zoom cam. This thing is great and a level down from SLRs.
If you want something pocketable, look at the Canon Powershot SD410.

I just picked up a Nikon D50 w/ 18-55mm kit lense. I've wanted a dslr for a while, and I'm definetly happy with it so far compared to the digital point'n'shoots I've been using. I've been real dissapointed with the response time and abysmal battery life of my point'n'shoot. I haven't had a good opportunity to go out and take pics yet, but the couple pics I've taken indoors were real nice.
I probably wouldn't have bought something right now, but I found a real good deal. Butterfly photo had the kit for $580, over $100 less than anybody else was selling for Besides, all the reviews on the D50 were very favorable, and while its lacking some features, its more than enough for my current skill level. I'll probably pick up another lens at some point when I can afford it, but for now I'll learn with what it came with.
