WTF is going on here?!?!

Ok....to those who know...this needs no explanation....what is going on with the black bar?!

What am I doing wrong here? Position of the flash? Not enough of them?

I can't see the exif to get the shutter speed, but it looks like you found your max sync speed. I'm guessing the shutter speed is higher than 250th?

Poindexter 08-06-2007 09:33 PM

I'm not sure :thinker: - do you have a hood on? What are you shooting at? Exif?

NFRs2000NYC 08-06-2007 10:01 PM

Oh... I believe the shutter was at 400, ISO at 100, and F11 or 12....

So it's the shutter isnt it...thats the black bar, the shutter on it's return trip... :banghead:

I knew it was something massively stupid. Im such an ass. I did get two great keepers though...

NFRs2000NYC 08-06-2007 10:06 PM

This is why I love this forum...you guys are 100% correct. The sh!t shots are 1/400, and this one (crap anyway, but no bar) was 1/100....

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b169/Nirvanaib/W5.jpg

So basically, the shutter speed cant exceed the speed of everything else...so what is that normally? 1/250?

pepperoni 08-06-2007 10:16 PM

That's it.
I think the 30D will sync up to 1/250th with off-camera flash. Try 1/200th, 1/250th and then 1/320th and see what you get.

Thanks a lot bud. You have no idea how hard I was banging my head against the wall trying to figure it out...and never did. I remembered what Norm told me about light falling off, but realized it was waaay too uniform to be light falloff. Should have thought of it before.

You guys rock my socks.

Now you see what I was griping about in another thread. Higher sync speed is very valuable. Does your camera/flash not give you a warning when you exceed max shutter speed?

I dont think so...but I could be wrong.

pepperoni 08-07-2007 07:53 AM

The black line is the warning.

If you have 430EX, 550EX, or 580EX (possibly more..?) on the camera hotshoe, you can set the flash to high speed sync (press the lightning bolt once) and go waaaay up there with your shutter speeds. But once you're off camera, your shutter speed is limited.

FWIW, the 1dmk2n can get to 1/320th with a very small line across the bottom, so if you compose for it, you can crop it out.
