AP1 to AP2 front bumper conversion

As some of you already know, when I drove off the Port Angeles ferry a few weeks ago, the ramp was a bit steep and it took a bite out of my front end. I got as far as the final turn off to San Fran, hit a big ridge in the road and my whole Air Walker lip fell off. I ran over it and last saw it headed for the center median. Although only minor damage was done to the front bumper, this gave me all the excuse I needed to finally do the '04 conversion:

I ordered from HARDTOPGUY, Ganley Honda in Ohio. It took 12 days to get here by ground transport. From the way the contents were still packed, it doesn't even look like Canada Customs opened it. Hardtopguy honoured my request to NOT use UPS and sent it by FedEx, for which I am most grateful. This has been a NO HASSLE, extremely expeditious transaction.

You want to know why I didn't do this locally? Here's a recap:
For the front bumper, grill, painted front lip, painted tow hook cap and miscellaneous extra hardware I requested to modify the car to accept this bumper, the total charged on my CC (so in Canadian $$$$) from Hardtopguy is:
768.84
I am still waiting to hear from FedEx to see what other charges are forthcoming (duty, GST, brokerage). I can be very certain it won't be anywhere near what UPS would have reemed me for.

Priced locally WITHOUT the extra hardware:
1718.62 :eek3:

At the last meet, did anyone see a big "S T O O P I D" tatooed across my forehead? This was a no brainer.

NEXT: Find a good painter for a reasonable price.

NICE!

Glad to see you're taking the plunge, Dave

Shouldn't be much more than $300 to paint that bumper. I would think...

Are you going to do more 3M film on everything?

BobbyS2k Aug 9, 2005 09:22 AM

Don't they come pre-painted from the factory?
At least that's what I thought.

AW lip was held on with double sided sticky tape and 2 screws (one in each wheel opening).
No special pricing for me. I just ordered off Hardtopguy's website and it's whatever was quoted there. One thing though, even though I asked for FedEx, the email confirmation still indicated UPS and the subsequent 440.00 US for shipping. I almost freaked. But Joe assured me it was coming FedEx and as you can see by my converted final price, shipping was very cheap, about 50 bucks Can (and I don't think they sent it COD for shipping).

I'm going to go without the 3M on this. I still have the film on all the parts aft of the bumper. If it gets really bad, I'll take it off and repaint it and then consider the film later.

Bobby, no, the bumper comes unpainted. Only the lip and tow hook cover comes painted. That's mainly why the lip costs so much.

I see. I was thinking of the hardtop being pre-painted.

Oh well, I'd love to see pix once you have it installed.

thanks,
Bobby.

Dave,

Looks awesome. Can't wait to see the finished product on the car. Any thought given to the '04 headlights??

Asif

Asif, no, I'm quite happy with the ones I've got. To me, the current headlights aren't different enough to justify the price and added mods to wire them in.
