Thumbs up A quick question on importing from the states

If anyone on here as imported a Honda auto from the states could you please help me out here. RIV Canada says that for the Federal inspection I do not require an ACTUAL recall letter from Honda stating no recalls. They said to me that I can just go on the owners link website pop in the VIN and print off the recalls page along with other pages showing the VIN to Canadian Tire.

Can anyone confirm this? Did Canadian tire give you the thumbs up when you just brought in those printed off sheets?

Just FYI you can only get an actual Honda Recall letter if you live in the united states with a US drivers license.

Also, how much is it for them to install the DRL's (daytime running lights)?

Many thanks fellow Canadians =)

Yes they did accept the papers from the hondas owners website and expect anywhere from $100-$250 to install the DRL's.

Canadian Tire was a PITA for me.. They demanded a hand-written letter from a dealership signed by the service manager.

I got my DRLs wired up kinda hack-job (HIDs on whenever the key is in) since it's just a temporary job -- I'm moving to the US in a few months and I'll have them removed. It was really cheap that way, under $100 I think..

If RIV says that's all you need i guess in theory then that should be all you need. Canadian Tire is doing the inspection on behalf of them and RIV sets out what is required for the inspection. If you're buying the car in the US you can have the owner call and get a recall letter sent to him, or you can have them get a recall letter from a Honda dealership, should you require a signed letter. I know of a few Canadian members who said they didn't require a signed one. My guess is it may depend on the individual Canadian Tire you go to, what you require exactly may varie store to store (much as with anything run by the government, information varies greatly from person/person or depatment/department and misinformation seems abundant).

As for the DRL's if you are willing to do a bit of work yourself you can do it properly for around $75. Otherwise, i believe most dealerships will charge around $250-$300. There is a site made by a guy in Ontario who did the DRL's here.

Hope that helps you some

Canadian Tire west Edmonton was also kind of tough on me. I did everything the riv website said. I got a authorized dealership to write me a letter. Got to Canadian Tire and they couldnt accept it. Luckily i knew a mechanic there, he printed off one off honda's website.

DRL i got installed at wilsons auto tech. Kind of pricey, i think it was just over 200. Basically all they ddi was wire the headlights so the hids are on constantly.

Hey guys one more question,

Whats the deal with trip permits? If i get a car from Oregon and travel up through Washington into BC then to AB, do I need to get trip permits for each individual state / province I am in?

Or if I buy a trip permit in Oregon is it good for Washington then once I get into Canada I need to get one from BC so I assume it would be good in AB as well?

Thanks

You have to get a trip permit from the US DMV. That is only good till the border. What you should do is get the trip permit from the Canadian border up from a registries office ahead of time.

i got my s2k from oregon too!

Thank you hockey_fan59, you have been very helpful!

One last question, where do I pay the tax that is due on my car when I bring it in? Should I bring cash with me to pay for the tax?

Thanks again!

First off, Canadian tire has no real say in the recall clearance letter anymore. They now require that the recall clearance letter you submit must be faxed to RIV Canada and they look it over and ok it. I guess too many people were submitting unsatisfactory letters and Canadian Tire was putting them through. So if RIV says its ok, it should be ok.

With regards to registration, here in manitoba we have public insurance and we buy our temp registration from them. So all i have to do when i'm down in the states is fax a copy of the bill of sale and both sides of the title to MPI (manitoba public insurance), they look it over and call me at a given number, ask me what kind of coverage i want and for how long, I give them my credit card number, they fax back a paper for me to sign, I fax that back to them and then they fax me a receipt and a paper which i fold in half and tape in the passenger side bottom of the front windshield. Have to buy these things for a minimum of 5 days and a max of 30 days. During that time we can drive anywhere we want and are fully covered for everything just like we had plates.
