Default Clunk from rear suspension ?

Been hearing a clunking noise from the rear whenever I go over something like a road heave, best way I can describe the sound is it sounds like the railroad tracks when a train is passing by that type of clunk. I tried to look for anything that seemed busted while I was under the car but couldn't find anything obvious. Any help is greatly appreciated! Car is at 88k miles 2004

My 2006 with 32000 miles had a very similar noise from the rear at slow speeds over bumps in the road. Turned out to be a bad shock (good local S2000 mechanic diagnosed it) so I replaced them both and the noise went away. Took a while to find the OEM shocks and wasn't cheap but it fixed the problem.

Yeah my initial assumption was that it was coming from the strut assembly thank you for solidifying it, was planning on changing them soon too thank you!

That would be one of my last guesses. First guess woukd be swaybar end link.

You might not feel any play, yet they can still be worn enough to clunk.

Easy and cheap to diy.

Always best to check the cheapest and easiest fixes first, but in my case it was the expensive strut/coilover/shock issue that fixed the problem. I assume my mechanic did some troubleshooting before just throwing parts at the car. Ended up being about $1300 parts/labor if I remember, been a few years now since I sold the car.

Yeah, I didn't mean your diagnosis on your car. I meant assuming your diagnosis would apply to another car. As the only choice for what is wrong. Running out to buy new shocks with no actual diagnosis.

sway bar end links can be sources of those types of noise as noted above, worth a check if they are loose or even broken
