I honestly wouldn't get anything "JDM cool" in the $1-1.5k range. They're usually the lower quality and budget models made in China and not much R&D behind them. I'd stick with Koni or Bilstein for budget, CR (Sachs) for OEM reliability and durability, Ohlins for midrange, or something like AST/JRZ/Penske for high-end.
