HELP, Rear Brake issue
Hi All,
I have and 04 AP2 with very low miles.
Has anyone had this issue:
I pull into my driveway when I come home. My driveway has an uphill angle.
If I put the car in reverse or if I just let it roll backwards then as it is rolling I hit the brakes. When I do this I hear a fairly loud clunk as the brakes actuate in the rear.
I do not hear anything in the front just the rear.
Today I checked the caliper bolts and the guide pins to make sure they were not loose and properly torqued on to spec and they were as they should be.
Thanks for your help
Mark

Did you check the rear axle nuts?
I looked it up and found that the rear axle nut is 24mm and has a torque of 181 ft lbs.
I don't think I have a 24mm socket, I'll have to buy one.
Is this correct?
Is there anything I need to do to tighten this nut other than putting a socket and a torque wrench on it?
Do these need to be checked/re torqued periodically?
What about the detent in the nut?
Thanks

this is normal, it is called pad shift. it is a common thing on most honda's and does no damage. just your rear brake pads will shift and make noise when reversing and stopping, only the first time, right after moving forward and applying brakes. for example, if you put it in first and move forward and hit the brakes, stop. then reverse and hit the brake again, you will hear the brake pads shift and make a clunk noise in the rear. try to reverse again and hit the brake again, you shouldn't hear the noise. you should only hear the noise the first time reversing and applying the brakes. if you can repeatedly reverse only and hit the brakes and the rear clunks everytime, you have some other problem. for the brake pad shift, try to lube the rear brake pads with some kind of brake pads quiet, may help with some of the noise and help the pads not shift as much.
hope this will help!
p.s.the rear axle nuts are a 36mm i believe. or 34mm but no way 24mm.

^^ what I wanted to hear. I have had the same problem but it only happens occasionally so I haven't paid it much mind. I haven't had the issue in previous cars so I thought it was something wrong with my car alone. Glad to hear it isn't a problem.

i work for a honda dealer in hawaii. my new 2008 does the same thing. there is a svc bulletin for odyssey's and pilot's for their rear brake pads shifting and clunking in reverse and it is louder than most vehicles so they have a fix, which we install an extra brake shim on the back of the pad to make it quieter. i think the 24mm x 1.25 is the thread pitch/size of the axle nut hole.
