Ohlins DFV questions. Thinking about making the 12K/10K swap.
***Edit: Made the swap. See last page.
Hello friends.
I am thinking about the 12K/10K swap on my Ohlins. I've been really happy with the stock rates and my own spec preload/height setup.
While the suspension doesn't FEEL rolly because of how well the dampers slow the body motion....it definitely is rolly. Especially with my extra preload in the back. I'm referring to a track situation with 255 square RE71R's.
I love the way it rides. Love it. So I won't make the swap if I'm going to ruin that.
I'm looking for feedback from people that have started with 10K/8K and then swapped rates. Please tell me your experience. How much did the ride quality change? How do you like the handling? Lots of info is welcomed!
Tell me a story. Pretend I'm Denzel from Training day and you're Ethan Hawke. You wanna talk suspension or you wanna go to jail?

Well I will say I was surprised at how much going to 10k springs in the rear hurt the ride. Not horrible, just noticeable. Backing off the damping helps but it just does not ride quite as nice.
i would say now it rides a smidge worse than my koni yellow 9k/9k setup. When I first got the Ohlins, I would say the ride was about as good as the konis.
However, on track, the rotation is nicer. And it is very crisp on back roads, even at 20 clicks out. I can't see my s2k handling any better, without some serious penalties on ride.

Well....2KG/mm is equivalent to like 112LB/in. So its not an insignificant increase.
The dampers seem like they have some more strength left in them to handle more spring.
I am using 13mm of rear preload with the base Ohlins spring rates to net 1" of free travel. And I use a -8 setting on the dampers (all around).
I feel like the car just glides over stuff but provides the exact amount of feedback as it should.
I'm surprised AF that you're using -20 with significantly stiffer springs. That's softer than Ohlins recommendations for their base spring.
I haven't found the softer settings to be all that comfy. I don't like being jostled or floated around (under damped).
Have you tried running something like a -7 or -6?

I made the swap recently, it is definitely a notable change in ride quality.
With the stock spring rates the car was very mild on the street, almost to the point where I forgot how bad some roads in town are. Now that I am on the 12/10 setup the car is much stiffer and I feel every bit of road. The suspension is still great but for me the downgrade in street ride quality was immediate and notable.
I have not had a chance to get back out on track yet but I am sure I will appreciate it in that situation.

Dammit. That's bad news then.
Well...I do have a set of 12K springs kicking around. So no harm in trying, I suppose. I can usually swap out a S2000 suspension in 45mins - 1hr, including bushing clocking.
Nothing to lose, I guess. Hopefully, I get off my duff and get it done before storing the car for the winter :'(

Mine isn't a DD either. But I do like to enjoy it on the road without getting beat up.
I'll give y'all my back-to-back observations on this. Hopefully this week

Maybe try thicker anti roll bars to help roll,
soft springs allow compliance.
